Comment: On my husband's computer, he accidently deleted the SYSTEM INI FILE. When we turn on the computer it says that this file is uninstalled. How do I get it back? It says we can just reinstall it. Is this possible? Help, is there a site where I can download it for free? I am really not all that great on these things...

Reply: (edit)If you have DOS 6.0 or above, you should be able to do a undelete. When your machine is at the DOS prompt, type in "undelete c:\windows\*.*" if system.ini is recoverable, it will look like "?ystem.ini" in the undelete command. it will ask you to fill in the ? with the first letter of the file which in this case it would be "s". it should have no problem recovering the file if it has been recently deleted, and not to many changes to the data on the hard drive has taken place. Once the file is recovered, you may want to open edit and make sure that the contents of the file are not corrupt. If the file is not currupted, just restart your computer, and enter windows.

Reply: (edit)SYSTEM.INI is instalation specific and you can not use one from another system. You can go back to the one from when Win 3.1 was first installed. If you have added drivers since that time you will have to reinstall them after recovering SYSTEM.INI. At the C: prompt type DIR C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.* You should see a SYSTEM.CLN OR SYSTEM.BAK or bboth. Do this: CD C:\WINDOWS COPY SYSTEM.CLN SYSTEM.INI (if you have BAK and not CLN substitute SYSTEM.BAK in the COPY) If you now type WIN you should be O.K.

Reply: (edit)The same could be said of system.001 or system.syd if present. If system.001 exists, just rename it to system.ini and you should be fine From the Dos prompt in the C:\WINDOWS directory, type: REN SYSTEM.001 SYSTEM.INI

Reply: (edit)damn, why did I find one of the most difficult ways to solve this? Oh well, I gues it is better tnan figuring out all of the nessesay drivers, and rewriting a new system.ini file. *note to self: Provide simpler awnsers.*
