I'm anxious to get my Compaq LTE 486 laptop(no cd rom drive ) up and running with Win 95 again as I'll be using this one as a second computer I'm using a little newer Compaq LTE 5000 series that has the swappable Cd rom drive and floppy drive ,I was checking the removable hdd's and found out they are interchangable between the two just a matter of taking out the hdd and placing it in my cd rom drive of the 5300, The bios is on the 486 hdd,I'm not sure if this is the case of the 5300 it may have a bios chip, but here's where I start to have problems although I'm using another computer it's taking all specifications of the 5300 like this computer is a 133mhz 1.3 gig hdd 48 mgs of ram the other is 75 mhz 16 mgs ram 1.1 gig hdd, I have to have control over this, but how do I keep this imformation from installing, your comments or answers would be welcome,as this procedure should be standard regardless as these being Compaq laptops,I don't want to scare anybody with this question......Thanks Nero

if you cannot get it to start up get a copy of the dos6.22 from bootdisk.com or somewhere when msdos has started type
C:
to go to the C: drive then type
autoexec
if that will not work type
windows\win
or if the windows files are in win95 put
win95\win
that will get it started up that's all i can say

Don't install Win95 on the newer computer
create a directory and copy the win95
directory of the CD rom to the hard drive.
Reinstall in the old computer then run
setup.

Made sure that you can boot you old
computer from floppy. Preferred is the
version of Windows being installed.

This way setup installs the proper hardware.

Tech Fred ,How do I install anything on a hdd that tells me there is no operating system , this is what I get after numerous intalls of dos 6.22 ,and it's a little awkward swapping the floppy and cd rom back and forth
this things got me stumped ,after each and every dos install, mind you it goes through the install no problem,it's when I'm instructed to remove the last install #3 disk that it screws up,I get a small white and blue screen that reads ,get this it don't matter whitch way you do it ,If you use enter ,you lose all data, and if you use ESC it's gone ,and when I do shut it down ,It's telling me Missing Operating System again,What's going on here...Thanks for the
#6 response Tech Fred.......Nero

I have full version,In the past I've always installed the whole thing from the cd rom I've no knowlage what's so ever on just installing the batch files,On viewing the diretory what are the bach files called in list form,if I know what to click on I can send them to my desktop as long as I don't open it(I'd have a big mess of icons all over the place then) and span them to 1.44 size and do it the hard way by putting them on floppy disk I've got a whole slew of floppy disks, I think I'm having trouble because the hdd from the old Laptop has that none dos setup thing on front part of the hdd (3mgs) I've noticed that even fdisking and formating does not remove it,cause this is put aside from the rest of the hdd for the setup bios and this newer laptop can't read it, this is just my thinking If you know why let me know,This newer laptop has a bios chip on the motherboard as I was able to get the bios up without any hdd installed, anyhow Tech Fred this is getting me down to a point where maybe the in slow install of floppy disk is my only option,I've never had so much trouble with a computer as this one,Thanks......Nero

You should be able to install a minimal DOS
on the hard drive. Just enough to boot.
msdos.sys, io.sys, command.com
would be nice to also have himem.sys and
emm386.exe

It should be able to boot in both machines.
Drive should be correctly identified in
the respective BIOS's. Preferable to have
floppy boot first priority. Make sure
you set drive active with FDISK. (Must be
master on primary channel)

On your new machine you should have a boot
floppy that also has CD support.

Using the machine with the CD make a Win95
directory and copy the Win95 directory from
the CD into it. I am assuming that you have
about 500 Megaytes.

Install the HD in old computer. Check BIOS.
And check boot from both floppy and hard
drive. If it boots clean you should be able
to continue with installing Windows.

Good Luck and post back
