Still Locked-Up

Hi Nemesis and John What both of you suggested worked but did not enable me to fix the problem. By putting the DOS-5 disk that came with the computer in the "A" drive at boot-up, then hitting F3 and then a "Y," I can get an "A" prompt and then can change to a "C" prompt but it will not let me edit. It will not recognize CD Windows from here either. It says bad command of file name to both efforts. Dir /p will display all the files on my c drive and "type" will display config.sys and autoexec.bat but will not allow me to edit. I have tried to edit with the DOS Disk in the A drive and it still gives me the same error code. A computer guy at work suggested I try "Ctrl C" during boot-up, that worked to the extent it disrupted the boot-up process and by typing a "Y" will give me a "C" prompt but will not allow me to edit. Unlike the other process it does respond to "win" command but Windows 3.1 still goes to the initial Windows screen and then to a dark screen with a blinking cursor and will do nothing else. CD Windows and then SETUP does work here but all the setting here look OK, it does not allow an option to delete, REM out, or bypass the CD-ROM drivers. I tried downloading a copy of DOS-5 from the internet and tried each of those in the "A" drive but it still would not allow me to edit. Packard Bell only provided one DOS-5 disk and the version on the net came off as two, compressed but the DOS files on my computer and those on the Packard Bell DOS disk appear to be the same and the computer has worked fine before. When I have edited DOS files before this problem, I have always exited from Windows Program Manager. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Raymond

raymond, you need to use the edit command off the disk in your a drive; dos needs to read the command.com file from where it boots up (in this case, from the a drive). just type "edit c:\filename". you'll see the light come on in your a drive, and it will pull up the file off your c drive. also remember, when you go to save, choose "save as", then type in "c:\filename".
