I just reinsalled windows 3.1 on an old laptop and installed ie 3.02a which I downloaded from twocows. How do I setup the dialer? I can't find it anywhere. There is a 38k modem in the laptop. The hard drive is too small for win95. Do I need to download a dialer or what? The installation was successful acording to ie. If needed a free dialer would be nice. I have a dialup networking connection that only requires my logon name, password, and #.

Win 31 doesnt come with any 'dialup networking',which is why IE comes with it's own dialer, so if you have that you probably do have a dialer...do a file search for 'iedial.exe' and if you find that , thats the file you need to run.Drag it from filemanager to program manager to make a shortcut for it.
If not, you could have ended up with the version of ie3 that's meant for LANs, and doesnt have a dialer. Most do though.
Incidentally, on a machine like that you'd probably be a lot happier with Netscape 304, as IE3 cant even render half the pages it could view only a year ago,and is twice as slow as netscape3,has inferior FTP, lookup, and stability to netscape3,as well as NS3 can still view almost all the pages out there.
Netscape3 has to have javascript disabled, however, but otherwise it will definately run much better on your machine.
Youd have to keep the dialer from IE tho, as the free versions of netscape didn't come with one.
I believe you can uninstall IE3 and keep the dialer..

LightSpeed's page has IE 3.03 SP1 full install which comes with a dialer. This can be installed over IE 3.02.

http://www.oldstuff.myagora.net/lightspeed/main.html

From his page you can follow the instructions and decide if you want one big file or if you want to create 4 floppy disks for installing it onto your laptop.

Good luck.

I recommend Trumpet Winsock 2.0b. This stack and dialer is free for personal use and it works great on even very old machines.
Configuration is not as easy as the MS dialer, but I think its better....
