I had a notion that with fast PC's & lots of RAM, Windows 3.1 would be blazing fast. So I went back and set up a PC with Pentium 133 and 40 MB of RAM. It didn't work out as I had expected.
I guess I don't configue expanded/extended memory options correctly.
I even tried loading the entire OS into a RAM Virtual disk at startup for speed but that didn't work too good either.
Any ideas how to take advantage of RAM to speed up Win 3.1?

Have you ran MEMMAKER to optimize it for use wit windows? When you do, do a custom job. Include all drivers, and TSR's, Choose yes to all of the options, and let memmaker do its work. It will restart your machine, and when it is done, If your PC is working correctly, choose continue. then speed w/ Windows 3.1 will be a lot better than when it was not optimized with memmaker. you also might want to try to use DSKSPACE to compress your drive, it will make it seem as though you have a larger hard drive.

Argh! Don't use dskspace unless you are actually running out of hard drive space as it will actually make your PC slower.
Running mem maker may help. Also a thing to try is to download ram doubler. You can get it here:
http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/download/ramdublr.exe
Also you can take advantage of 32 bit disk access (if your controller/hard drive supports it) by upgrading to windows 3.11 Windows for Work Groups.
HTH a little,
Michael

Running Windows 3.xx in RAM is possible. I did it already but I need too do a complete setup soon.
Its better to have more ram than 40 Mb for that.
Leave 16 Mb for the system and use the rest as a RAM disk.
Larger RAM disks than 32 Mb can be made with a DOS utility called XMSDSK.
Harddisk can be set too sleepmode with other DOS utilities, which I haven't tried but I will....
If you have a processor that doesn't need a cooling fan and if your power supply fan is not noisy (or just broke like one of mine is I guess ;-) you wil have a complete silent PC!
