I've had great success using RAMDoubler for
Windows 3.1. I've noticed a considerable
increase in speed and free resources. You can
get it here:
http://lightspeedrefpage.homestead.com/files/Ramdoubl.zip

(download comes from Lightspeed's site)

One other thing you can do is to create a ram drive and move your browser's cache to it. With 32 MB of ram, you can spare 4 to 6MB easily. If you need help doing that, i was supposed to create an how to page on that subject way back when and never got around to do it. Perhaps now would be a good time if anyone needs it. If enough of you kicked my precious behind... lol!

PC Freak gave you a great advise about using Ramdoubler. This program is really great. He gives credit to me (thanks PC), but i'd like to give credit to Preston Lewis who made me discover this excellent ram compression program in the first place! He is the source for the program you can now download on my site (used to be available on his now defunct yahoo briefcase). If you are still around Preston...

HTH.

Does "ramdoubler" do anything to my computer that will slow it down or make anything not work.

The Ram Drive suggested by LightSpeed is a good option. I would really like to see a well written HowTo on making a RAM drive. It would help a lot of people, especially if it was aimed it at an audience other than the experienced user.

Consider your kiester kicked LightSpeed.

Check this out: http://www.wambooli.com/help/Windows/98/RAM_drives/index.shtml

It was intended mostly for newer versions of Windows, but it should fit your needs if you decide to try a RAM Drive. (I would recommend RAMDoubler even more if you're going to try this, since that would cut down your amount of RAM. (And it'd improve overall performance, not just internet.)

Also, I don't know of anything that RAM Doubler could do to mess up your system. If you have any problems, you can just get rid of it.

There was once one person who said on this forum that ramdoubler was interfering with one of his/her programs, but i don't remember which one, something few people use anyway. I always use it with WFW 3.11 and i have never encountered a problem with it. It won't interfere with any of the programs that are listed in my software section in any case, i have tested all of them. But Ramdoubler can easily be disabled if you need to. When you boot, just hit the [esc] key while the windows logo is on the screen and ramdoubler won't load for that session, but will load next time you reboot.

About the ram drive, if you use it, make sure you create a folder (ex: r:cache) and use that folder for your cache. Do not use the root directory of the ramdrive because it allows for a limited number of entries, and a browser's cache will exceed that number very fast. I also recommend that you allow no more than 85% of the space for use by the browser, because you need space for filenames/index

A nice program to create a ramdrive, besides the ramdrive.sys, is xmsdsk.exe, a small 20k executable that is a lot more flexible than ramdrive.sys. It can be loaded from the autoexec.bat file and can be resized easily from the dos prompt without rebooting. Find it on my site, along with ramdoubler, in the Software -> Memory utility section.

DR, thanks for the kick lol! Dunno when i'll have time to create the page, but i guess in the mean time i can send people to this topic here. :)

By overclocking you cant possibly mean the turbo switch?? The only way i know to overclock is to go into the bios settings ,where it can get messy fast....
You know, a lot of older 486's have got non-functioning turbo switches-you want to at least get the full speed of your chip. In case yours is disabled, theres an old ,tiny, program (1987- i did say old ) called , well.."speed.com" that'll at least make sure your running in fast mode. dunno where to find it tho, got mine from an old shareware disk

Even if you had one it wouldn't work, since the turbo switch is for activating/deactivating the math coprocessor, but this doesn't apply in your case, since your processor is a DX, meaning the math coprocessor is integrated. Basically, for you the turbo switch is always on.

Hey - lightspeed - i dont know if you check your old responses -but your last comment piqued my curiosity. i just dug into my cupboard and checked my old boards , as it turns out ive got three DX motherboards with spaces for co-processors , 1 SLC with a spot for one, and the SX's (which should probably need them most ) dont (except for one ) seem to have any at all.
??? ;)
