I think when you compress the hard disk the system can read data with larger chunks, which may speed up certain applications especially those with frequent disk read/write.

I had to take my computer to work the other day. I had it sped up to 75 mph on the freeway. OK. It was closer to 85 mph. I'm pretty bad about speeding. No one tell the CHP.

Hi,

Please follow the steps given speed up your system :
1>Defragmentation your hard disk once a week if you are using your computer everyday or defragment once a month if you are using it rarely.
Defragmentation is the process of re-arranging the files on your hard disk,
so that each file is arranged in a proper order so that the programs will start faster.
To defragment your hard disk,
A. Click on Start Button, Go to Programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> Disk Defragmentor.
B. Select the drive you want to defragment, Click Ok.
Note: If You have more than one drive, Defragment all the drives and will consume more time.

2. Clean up all your temporary files.
Click on "Start-> Find" & type "*.tmp" & click OK.
Delete all the files which can be deleted.

3. Click on Start Button, Go to Programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> Disk Cleanup.
In the " Disk Cleanup" Tab
Check all the "Files to Delete" Option.
Click OK
Note : Clean Up your disk every week.

4. Check up your system for viruses.
Use latest anti-virus software for checking the viruses.

5. Increase your Virtual Memory.
Provide Virtual memory of atleast of 300 MB on your hard disk.
Following are the steps to do so.
A) Right Click "My Computer", Click Properties.
B) You will get a System Properties dialog box, Click the Performance Tab.
C) Click the Virtual Memory Button.
D) Select the " Let me specify my own Virtual Memory Settings " option
E) And specify at least 300 MB as the minimum virtual memory in the Minimum
Text Box ( by default it will be zero )
F) And specify 350 MB or higher as the maximum virtual memory in the Maximum Text Box.

6. Use Scandisk utility also, it prevents and repairs hard disk errors ( if any ),
To Find Scan disk:
A. Click on Start Button, Go to Programs -> Accessories -> System tools -> Scandisk
B. Choose the "type of the test" you want to perform from the options in the Scandisk Dialog Box (i.e.,) Standard or Thorough
C. You can also Check the option for fixing the errors automatically by checking the option " Automatically Fix Errors "
D. Click OK.

7. Compress your Mail files regularly.

8. Empty your recycle bin regularly.

9. Remove the unnecessary files in the startup, this helps in starting windows faster.

After doing all this steps if the system performance slow then it is advisible to buy a new system with more memory.

Regard's
Sherlock
