Comment:

Can anyone suggest a few different brand names(plus Part number) of ISA or PCI sound cards that will have downloadable(off Web), drivers for DOS, Win 3.11 and W98SE plus the important DOS sound tester program.
I live in the bush and have to buy via mail.
Have been misled on three allready purchased.
Cannot get sound to work on a triple boot DOS6.22/Win3.11/98SE system.
Thanks

Here is my suggestion...try to purchase a YAMAHA OPL3-SAx Sound Card! Install it under Win98SE...once the Drivers are installed shutdown Win98SE & exit to DOS...the sound card will then automatically give u the option to configure it to work in DOS...the following line will be added to ur AUTOEXEC.BAT:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4

Simply Reboot ur PC & ur done...

The PC that I'm working on right now has a YAMAHA OPL3-SAx Sound Card installed in it...I haven't yet tested the Sound Card under Win3.1, so I cannot guareantee that it will work on it, but it will work in DOS & Win98SE...

If u are able to purchase one of these great Sound Cards, I will send u a link to the most recent Sound Drivers that are available...

Hey I almost forgot...

U could also search for a HiFi 16i ISA Sound Card...this card will definitely works in DOS, Win3.1, & Win98SE...

Trust me on this one, I had one of those cards installed in my old system & I used it (for about two years) with all 3 Operating Systems (GUI)...I must say that it had great sound quality...

As for the Yamaha OPL3-SAx sound card, I can guarentee that it works in Win3.1 and DOS as I used it when I had my 3.1 computer some years back. Also used it in Windows 95.

Hi farl.

My brother-in-law has this soundcard in his computer and it has beautiful sound as well as DOS drivers through to XP drivers.

It's $10.00.

Thanks everyone, have shot off emails to several used parts suppliers and hope to have replies next week. Will let forum know how I get on.
The link Linda (XLWH) gave was very interesting, the card "C-Media CMI8738 6 Channel PCI Sound Card, Retail Package Part#: DSCMI87386EVT " fitted the bill at $us10 but unfortunately they do not ship to Australia.
C Media are a chip maker and not a card maker. Have emailed Deal Sonic and hope they tell me the manufacturer so I can see if they have an Australian dealer. Google Australian searches did not turn up any details.

I'm running win 3.11 on DOS 6.2...
I had to dig out my old soundblaster 16 (ISA) to get everything to work.. even then I had to resort to the original installation CD. It seems that despite claims otherwise, creative only supplied the PCI management software.
I can email you all the drivers I use if you need.
cheers-
Ols

I have 2 Gravis Ultrasound PnP ISA cards, which work great in DOS and all Windows versions (so far) and they are the best I have.

This card is much better than all the cards mentioned before and if you need midi, then the previous cards are just a waste of money.

The last GUS PnP I found second-hand on the net and it was send to me for less than 11 dollar.

Other good cards I recommend are the Terratec Maestro 32 and the older (ISA) cards from Ensoniq and Turtle Beach.

If you want maximum DOS compatiblety then I recommend the Soundblaster 16....

Everybody i know back home that multiboots uses an isa soundblaster 16-as far as i know, its one of the few cards thats compatible with, and has drivers easily available for , every OS out there- pci sb16's can be a bit more problematic.
I have had up to 8 different os's installed at the same time ( i really! dont usually have that many going...)and all of them used the same card without any difficulty (sb16).

Thanks all for comments.
Picked up a SB16 isa on Australian Ebay for $A11.85 incl postage. Unfortunately no CD.
Hope to get in next 5 days.
Creative site is confusing for drivers.
Figured sbbasic.exe for DOS & W3.11 @ 1178kb
Figured sbw9xup.exe for W98Se @ 312kb
Seems strange DOS/W3.11 file larger than W98SE file.
Will let you all know how I get on.
