posted with this issue once before;trying again. I installed the 16-bit version of IE5 w/Outlook on a WfW3.11 system. I can browse & receive mail, but I can't send it. I've tried re/installing the mail account with all the proper settings (SPA), but for some reason I can't send mail. I've gone to the Microsoft site (supportservices.msn.com/us/smtptool/default.asp) & their recommendations don't change a thing.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there some patch that I need to get Outlook working?

It's probably something small and pretty silly. You know when you sometimes can't find something because it's sitting right in front of you? Really frustrating. Here is a setup guide with screen shots, hopefully, it will help you find that little error:

LOL! Oh, dear. I seem to have the same problem. The link I posted above was for OE 4.01 - Doh! Here is one for Outlook Express 5.0 **Blushes**

Doofus,

thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. When I applied the settings in your screenshots, I couldn't send or receive mail.
I'll just have to keep trying.
Thanks though.

Well, there is not much that can go wrong here. If you receive your mail, then the pop3 address and password are set correctly. If you can't send, it's probably that the smtp is incorrect. You can check with your isp and verify the outgoing address again. Also, it may be another thing, in the case you are attempting to setup a mail account with Yahoo for example rather than using your isp's account. If so, you may find that your isp doesn't allow you to use an external smtp address for outgoing mail. In that case, you have to set the pop3 and password to that of your Yahoo account, and use the smtp provided by your isp for sending.

Other than that, could be a bad installation of OE?

Don't go to Microsoft for support on this.
Its almost certain a problem with your Internet Service Provider, so contact them.

Ask for the smtp settings for outgoing mail....

I have two machines w/ Outlook Express installed on them. One is a P800 system running Windows2K;the other is the WfW3.11/Calmira system with the 16-bit versions of IE5 & Outlook Express.
I use the same ISP settings for both Outlook accounts. On the first system, I can send/receive mail;on the second, I can only receive it. That's the only weakness I can discern in your arguments that it's an ISP issue instead of one with the software.
As far as a bad install of OE goes, I've re/installed IE5 several times with identical results.
Any further input would be greatly appreciated.
Incidentally, thanks for the other input w/ all the other 3.1(1) issues I've been dealing with recently. This forum has been invaluable.

thanks

R.Dennis

That's pretty strange. I used Outlook Express 5 on my 486/WFW311 system without any problems, but it doesn't seem to agree with yours? Have you thought of trying another email client, like eudora light or pegasus?

I'm told Eudora is great!
