This Question May Seem Like A No-Brainer To Many, But I Am At A Loss.

I attempted to change the colors in the windows 3.1 setup program to 256 from the 16 it was running. After selecting the 256 color program I wanted, I can no longer access windows. When I try, all I get is this message:

"Cannot run windows because of video device conflict. You need to run the setup program again."

Can anyone instruct me on what I have done wrong, and hopefully tell me how to correct it?

Thanks for any help you might give to this problem!
John

You must change it back in dos mode.
start the computer in dos(you may need to push f8) and say yes to dos and no to windows if it is setup to go to windows. then you type cd windows and push enter.
then type setup and you will get a screen to change the monitor screen res. You may need your orgignal disk to get drives from so have them at hand. You video card can not handle the high res that you want so put it back to the 16 color.

It sounds to me that your Graphics Card is unable to run Hi-Res SVGA higher than 640x480 It may be a VGA Card or has less than 512KBs of Video RAM (1MB if 600x800 or 1024x768 is selected) both of which will create the problem you discribe. The MS SVGA.EXE runs 99% of SVGA Cards with 256KBs of Memory or more.
