Comment: I am trying to install windows 3.1 on our charity computer and am geeting set up error #214. This says setup either cannot open or create the file a:\user.exe which is required to set up windows. Setup cannot continue. the file may be in use by another application. you need to quirt setup , and then quit the application that is using the file. then run set up again. Can you help

Reply: (edit)A quick search for that Win3.1 error seems to indicate a corrupted installation diskette. Try using another set, or maybe (maybe not) the disk could be repaired with a utility such as scandisk, diskfix or Norton.

Reply: (edit)i scanned disk and it repired errors. however after installation of disk two it comes up with black screen and has error loading USER.EXE. it then has command prompt c:\windows> can anyone help further or even e mail me disk 2

Reply: (edit)You could check Woof's site: www.btinternet.com/~woofgbr he had Win3.11, but you'd need the whole set. You could look through older posts for another site - or you could post a separate request for a replacement disk.
