I have an original IBM PS/1 2011 and have installed Dos 5 and Windows 1.04 on it. The PS/2 mouse works with DOS but Windows 1.04 was not compatible with PS/2 mice. The computer has no serial port for a serial mouse. Is there another way to hook up a serial mouse or make Windows compatible with PS/2 mice.P.S. You would have to see this to know why I chose Windows 1.04 instead of 2 or 3.11.
P.S. I do have a parallel port if that can help.-Yapsterb

You could try a serial to PS/2 adapter..but i expect it wouldnt work, because the problem was with windows 1.04 lack of driver support, not IBM ( after all, they put that port in the computer - there musta been OS support somewhere...)..i'm not sure OS/2 1.3 will run on an 8088, but have you tried it?..there's likely more compatibility, but remember, the computer runs entirely in real mode..period, and all the devices (peripherals) you connect to it have to have pretty much been designed to deal with low memory situations..(but after all, "640K should be enough for anyone".. yeah O.K Bill, whatever you say..( he really said that!)
Perhaps you should try out toastytech.com for some interesting ideas with fossilized PC's (he's got a really interesting GUI gallery that goes just waaay back...)
Just a thought....

Still No Luck. Is it possible to use a parallel port for a serial port with a connector. Windows is compatible with serial mice, just I don't have the port.

Dude, you probly do have a serial port I belive.
You may have 2 25-pin ports. The female one (AKA Parelell) then a male one (AKA serial) Its just the older 25-pin style.
What you mayy have to do is either rewire up a 9-pin serial mouse to 25 with the proper pinouts or get a 25-pin serial mouse.

On the back of this computer I have a 2400 bps modem, a 7 hole PS/2 mouse port, a 7 hole PS/2 keyboard port, a 25 HOLE parallel printer port, a 3 row 15 hole monitor port and a 2 row 15 pin monitor port to supply power to the CPU. There is no serial port on this computer. Thanx.
P.S. This is the original PS/1 2011.

Oh. Thats odd. You need to get an I/O card with a serial port or check if theres pins on your mainboard for serial ports.
Thats just not like IBM. Such a quality company. Maby the previous owner took it out

I don't think so.
Machine type 2011 was released in August 1990. It is a very peculiar computer...
Computer standards were far from uniform 14 years ago - and IBM was trying to set its own with the PS/1 and PS/2 series.
Doubtful if there are connectors for a serial port, I would suggest an add-in card, but that may not work on this model. Also not sure if it used ISA or MCA slots.
Quite a museum piece - have you considered trying Win3.0 - it should support a PS2 mouse. Windows 1.04 is little more than a file manager - you'd likely get more functionality from DOSSHELL.
Never heard of any way to use LPT port as a COM port.

Should have read more thoroughly - from that link:
"CPU: Intel 80286 at 10 Mhz. No slots (!), no serial Port (!)"
... so there you go - you'll have to make do with the mouseport.

I have a model 2121 and home. It has no serial ports either.
Mine has 2 MB of onboard memory and I think that I paid $40 US for another 4 Meg update. Now it it maxed out at 6 Meg of RAM and able to run WFWG 3.11.
I don't remember if I stuck a network card in that one or not.
Mine came with the DOS 4 and the QUAD system that is talked about in the link supplied by jboy above. That all ran fine with the PS2 mouse. At one point that QUAD system was available for download. It is just a sort of DOSSHELL program (pre-windows like interface). I don't know where you could find it these days.
Good luck,
DR

I don't know if a parallel port will work with a mouse on windows 1.04 . I used a serial to parallel port adapter to make a serial mouse work with windows 95a and it works fine, but then again 95a scanns for the hardware. I believe win 1.04 has only a set of options to choose from. Good luck anyway.
