I want to get laplink 4 to transfer data from 3.11 OS to CD. The software needs a serial cable. Is this a typical run of the mill serial cable?

Usually you use a 'LapLink parallel cable', but a 'null modem serial cable' may suffice if LL4 supports serial communication, either cable can be bought from a good PC shop.

Yes LapLink supports both 'Parallel Data' and 'Null Modem' Transfer Cables. A Normal Modem Cable will not work... (Newer Windows versions even support faster USB Transfer Cables) Parallel is faster, but LapLink (and FastLynx) are able to upload a copy of itself to a remote computer via a 'Null Modem' Cable. Ideal if you need to access a Laptop with no Floopy Drive! (Drive does however need to be bootable)
Null Modem Cables can be 9 or 25 Pin Female RS232 Sockets. You can get them as Double Headed Cables for use on older PC's with only 25 Pin Connectors.

Reading your message again. I take it you mean the CD/R is in a differant PC?
As LapLink is a PC to PC Transfer Program only!

Yes the CD rom is in a different PC. I want to transfer the files the new PC (Win 2000) then burn them to a CD.
The lap link 5 supports serial but not parrellel cables. Lap Link 5 is the only supported Lap link software that will work for Win 3.11
Thanks for the assistance

Take a look at
http://www.laplink.com/download/llv/PS_LLV_EN.pdf
which will tell you that LapLink V does indeed support Parallel Data Cables
As will FastLynx II
http://www.oldfiles.streamlinetrial.co.uk/powerload/fastlynx.htm
FastLynx Version 2.0 for DOS/Windows 3x is available as a free download and Version 3.3 for ALL versions of Windows available as a Trail Download from Sewall Development. Who also sell the cables if you need them.

I find it hard to believe that laplink V does not support both cable types. I haven't felt the need to use "V" but here's the deal::
You can use ll3 or 4 either one, they are DOS based, but there is no advantage, really, to using any Windows3xx software over a good dos progam.
My concern would be the whamox2000 machine--if it has NTFS, will it work with laplinkV, and since whinedoz2000 IS NOT A DOS BASED system, with it work at all with laplinkV?

Later versions of LapLink will, but that is also why I recommended FastLynx 3.3 which will work with ANY version of Windows 3x, 9x or NT/XP based, and costs a lot less than LapLink.
FastLynx 3.3 is available as a Trail Download to check it out, as is the latest version of Laplink! which offers a 30 day trial - Time to do what you want I should think!!
