Hello,
Is it possible to update File Manager in win 3.11, so I can save files from win98 without changing the file name to the old file manager version?
I want to use my old Win 3.11 laptop computer to store my current files.

You won't be able to save using file manager because win 3.11 only recognizes fat 16 or just fat whilst win 98 is fat 32 (mostly).

I think what Paul means is the file name not the file system. If I'm right, there is no way to view long filenames under Win 3.11 because it wasn't supported back then. I don't think there are any updates available!

There's a Win32 utility which will rename long filenames to 8.3, and produce an index so you can backup in DOS and then restore the files and their long names (automagically). I'll try and find it...

At long lost I've found that utility I mentioned. It's called Renamer and I got it at the beginning of the year, but it's no longer available for download. It's less than 6kB, so mail me for a copy.
From a DOS prompt in the folder of files you redirect DIR to a file e.g. DIR > files.lst (try this even without Renamer as it can be useful if you're dealing with only a couple of files).
The files are then transferred to the DOS/Win3.x system, where they lose their long filenames.
When they are transferred back to a Win32 machine, from within their folder run: renamer files.lst which will restore the original filenames.
