Hi everybody,
I have some replies to a previous subject pending of my reply, but at present I have a new problem with my Windows 3.1: The RUNONC16.exe attacked the winsock.dll. I installed, with my diskettes, again Windows 3.1 in another directory trying to find the file runonc16.exe in order to substitute it in the windows directory, but there is not such a file. Then, I think there are several versions of Windows 3.1. At now the runonc16.exe attacks the shell16x.dll file.
Where can I find the runonc16.exe file? Is somebody ready to send me it by e-mail?
Hoping to hear from you soon, adios
Salvador

Runonc16.exe, as well as shell16x.dll and others, are all Internet explorer 5 (and possibly 4) installed files..after you install IE windows runs runonc16.exe to initialize the browser, and then it's no longer needed (runonc = run once..get it?)it's likely in your 'load' or 'run' entries in your win.ini files, and that entry can be removed (deleted) after the first reboot.

Hi everybody;
One of my problems was that I cannot download the home page of http://www.lavanguardia.es with my 486 computer with 40 MB RAM (pairs of 4, 8 and 8 MB sticks 72 pins in 3 sockets) and with Netscape 3.0 or Internet Explorer 5.0 for 16 bits. Some kind experts told me that it was due to lack of memory, and other ones that the memory was enough.
I tried to buy more memory, two sticks of 64 MB, and the seller told me he should test whether my computer support them. He took my computer and 20 minutes later he come back and told me that the computer did not support them, and that he left in the machine the sticks it wore, i.e. the 40 MB.
I come back home, connected the computer and see that when initiated Windows an error message appeared telling "RUNONC16 has caused an error in general protection in the module WINSOCK.DLL in 0001:20CE - Close". I closed but the machine worked in the WRITE editor, but when I tried to connect Internet, a new error message appeared: "PROGMAN has caused an error in the general protection in KRNL386.exe in 0001:5EA0 - Close", and when I closed the prompt of DOS appeared.
I could come back to the seller to have my computer in good order, but I do not trust in him. Thus, I tried to arrange the problem and at last I decided to install Windows 3.1 with my diskettes but in a new directory named W. When I write "win" and enter, I connect with W (not the old directory WINDOWS), and when I go to the file manager and double click netscape.exe, a message appears that there is not such a file or that it cannot be loaded. Therefore, I can't connect with Internet. Perhaps in order to load Netscape I must not doubleclick on netscape.exe. And when at the prompt of DOS I put the directory of the old Windows, i.e. C:\WINDOWS>, and I write "win" and enter, the machine connects with the WINDOWS directory but the error message becomes "RUNONC16 has caused a failure at loading a segment in the module SHELL16X.DLL in 0002:670C - Close", and when I try to connect with Internet the error message caused by PROGMAN persist. Some kind experts told me that runonc16.exe is a Internet Explorer file, but why is it in the c:\windows\system directory and not in the c:\msie50 one?
This is the problem situation at present. Any help would be welcome. Many thanks in advance. Obviously, first I must solve the problem of Windows and the conection with Netscape and Internet Explorer, and then the problem of the memories.
Farewell
Salvador

I've already told you in my last response..delete the entry that says runonc16.exe in your ' run' or 'load' line in your win.ini..you *don't* need that file anymore and it will cause GPF errors..it doesn't matter if the file is in your system folder or msie folder as you can just delete the file too..but if you don't delete the ini file entry first, then when windows starts up it will try to load or run that file..thats why you REMOVE it from the 'load' or 'run' lines in your system file..do it in sysedit, notepad, or from dos, whatever makes you happy..then delete the file..or not, windows isn't gonna look for it if the system files don't tell it to...
Incidentally, if you have two windows 31 directories installed and you don't know how to set your dos path, you're asking for real problems..especially if it (windows) is not named 'windows' and you have programs that were installed when it *was* called windows..get rid of the second one (W) .
Renaming and reinstalling stuff when you don't know what the problem is can soon lead to an unusable system...remember the cardinal rule ..only change ONE thing at a time so you know what worked or not..

Hi, dominicus,
Thanks for yor reply.
I have deleted runonc16.exe from the win.ini file and can accede to Windows, but when I try to connect IE an error message appears: "Error at loading c:\msie50\winsock.dll", and I can't accede.
And if I try to connect Netscape 3.00, the error message of PROGMAN attacking KRNL386.exe persist, and at now followed by the error message of the same PROGMAN attacking USER.EXE, and closing Windows.
So, I canīt accede to Internet neither have my computer working like before the memories seller's intervention.
Farewell
Salvador
