Hi.

two questions really, appologies if they are answered else where but I got back to 2000 and they weren't.
Question 1 : Can I run windows 3.1 or 3.11 on a P4 machine? Will it cause any problems?

Question 2 : I have SW that was designed to run on Windows 3.1/3.11, what (if anything) will stop me from running this on XP? I was told that it wouldn't run by 1 guy but he couldn't give me a reason that didn't sound as though he was making it up, and another guy thought that it should be able to run on XP.

Cheers

HD

1) only if you install MS-DOS first, W3.xx is a GUI for MS-DOS. Yes problems, two come to mind. VGA Driver not available, CPU may run too fast for older apps, causing runtime errors.

2) XP has no MS-DOS subsystem, therefore the W3.xx software will have a hard time finding the neccessary MS-DOS files...

Of course, though, that's not to say all 3.xx programs will not run on XP, as many do.

You could always install a more recent O/S then run dos and win3.x and the relevant app on either Virtual PC (free) or VMWare (commercial, not free) thus getting around the driver and lack of DOS problems . . . . .

errata

eems = seems
test = text

for those who think that I to pay more attention to my proofreading: I`m cursed with a brain that automatically corrects mistakes when I`m reading without notifying me on a conscious level. It has been a real pain at times, Though i`m do tend to sometimes notice mistakes that many people have missed, such as at a huge electrical exhibition on the last day I noticed a glaring error on a company sign on their stand, turns out I had been the only one to notice it all week :)

mmm i dont think its just a gui for dos because i cant get my dos drivers to work in 3.1 so it is a o.s . it should run but i hav been having problems getting my cards to install
legacy stuff would be easier to set up or try a dos box program to emulate the x86 to run in xp or other windows 32 bit versions

One problem running legacy software on a fast machine is that some programmers used the clock or some such for things such that, on a faster machine, the software either runs so fast that you can't keep up, or logical errors crop up because the program expects something slower than its running on and things get out of sync. That said, so far I'm only finding 32-bit emulation software. If anyone is sure that there is 16-bit capability out there, I'd be happy to try it out.
