I'd like to run a few windows 3.1 games on XP and was wondering which system files/dll's I'd need. I want to run the games Runner (great game - see link below), Microsoft Arcade, Stars! & Zoop. Windows 3.1 also seems to require a DOS extender as well.

Not much chance there. Win 3.1 programmes will be 16 bit and Windows XP is 32 bit.

If the games require a DOS extender you have no chance as Windows XP has no DOS to extend.

Kinda makes you wonder why everyone is in such a big rush to toss an older machine in favor of the biggest and baddest.

Windows XP is backward compatible down to Windows 95 for program support.Windows 3.1 programs were left to run on any other Windows system you may have.It is not a bad idea to keep the Pentium I or II computers to run these programs when you change for the XP computer of your choice.Dual booting Win 98 and XP is also a solution if you have only one computer.Dual booting is easily done if you install Win 98 first to C drive followed by Win XP to D drive.Win XP is like Win NT and will install the dual booting feature. When you boot the computer with this setup you will be asked which one you want to boot to.Good luck.

If the games are DOS based this may help....

VDMSound is a soundblaster emulator. I use it to play older games, like King's Quest and Dark Forces, in Win2000. Don't know if it'll get things to work, but it should help if sound becomes an issue.

Hi All 3.1 users:
Here's a way (guessing) that might get around the problem, I would buy a removable hard drive port (with extra HD holder) & use a second old hard drive for just Win 3.1 programs. The only problem would be that you would have to use the SVGA.EXE from Powerload's site, this should give you SVGA with 256 colors. If you need more colors then you need an older PC that has video card drivers for Win 3.1, don't think you want to change video cards when changing OSs.

Good luck,
Z

I think there should be a good chance if its a windows 3.1 game and not dos game because windows NT has a 16 bit subsystem

(almost sure m$ didnt remove it from xp)

If you notice you can still run some 286 dos programs in XP fine tho xp`s dos support is limited

quick follow up... if M$ did remove the 16bit subsystem you could probably inject the one from windows 2000

Considering that I'm able to run MCOM Mosaic 0.4 (earliest known Netscape beta) without a hitch on XP Home, I'd say it will work.

While Windows XP has its faults one of the things it can do is run some of the older programs. 16-bit is not always a problem with WinXP. XP is NT, but heavily modified. It's "based" on Windows 2000 which is "based" on NT technology (i.e., NT 4).

I have a DOS program written in 1980 (the first spreadsheet written) that still works in a Command Line Interface (DOS) box without a hitch. I have a number of smaller Windows 3.1 games that are 100% 16-bit that also work quite well under XP. These are smaller games like Chess, Chips, Golf, Tetris, SkiFree, etc.

Windows XP has Windows 95 emulation. It is quite possible that an ornery game may work correctly. Right-click the game icon after it's installed and click the compatibility tab. Choose your color depth, Win95 emulation and the disabling of visual themes if they cause a problem. (Corel's PrintHouse 1 refuses to work in an NT environment. But with Win95 emulation it works as well as it ever did under Win95).

The percentage of Windows 3.1 programs that were supposed to work on Windows 95 was 95%. I'm not sure of the ratio for XP (probably much less) but give it a whirl and let us know if you've had success.

;)

What??

I ran all of my (large) cache of Win 3.1 apps on my XP (well, not the ones I had better versions of - ie Office XP vs. Word 6.0c)

I even had Norton Desktop as my shell for quite some time.

I ended up ditching XP in favor of 2000, but a 16-bit program should run in XP.
