Comment: IF ANYONE HAS SUCCESSFULLY USED VMWARE FOR ANY OPERATING SYSTEM, PREFERABALY WINDOWS 3.X, PLEASE HELP ME... I AM DESPERATE FOR HELP. I am running Microsoft Windows XP Professional. I have a copy of VMWARE (cracked version, no $300 registration required!!!!!). I also have downloaded 8 Windows 3.11 disks, and put all the data on to floppies. I started the VMWARE software, set up a 3.1 system. and powered it on. When it started, it went through bios, and a message reading 'NO OPPERATING SYSTEM FOUND' came up. I then made a MSDOS boot disk and tried it. MSDOS loaded in VMWARE, but I could not access my cd drive, or hard drive. I tried changing the floppy, but it would not read any disk other than the boot disk. It would just pause and keep trying to read the cd, and it would never work. How can I get this to run with VMWARE?

Reply: (edit)UPDATE: I booted from a Windows 98 CD. I entered the DOS Prompt. I was then able to use the cd drive and the floppy drive. I then entered the Windows 3.11 for Workgroups Setup. When I got to the screen which asks for the location of the system files, it said 'could not write folder' or something. I then rebooted VMWARE and entered FDISK. I added a DOS patrition, and then I went back to the prompt. I typed in c: in the prompt and it showed c:/> or whatever. When I typed in dir for c:. it said 'invalid disk' and it asked me to either retry, or abort. What should I do? Note non VMWARE users: You can help me too. Pretend that you have a clean hard drive and you want to install 3.11. How would you do this?

Reply: (edit)Partitioning must always be followed by formatting the disk with the FORMAT C: command. After that your C: drive will be accessable. BTW: what is VMWARE exactly? Is it an OS or what?

Reply: (edit)I also have VMWare 3.1.1 biuld 1750. VMWare is an application that will create a virtual machine within your existing machine. You do not need to back anything up on your main OS, as the VMWare application will not have access to your hard drive unless you wish it to.

Reply: (edit)okay... I went in and used a Windows 98 CD to start up the MSDOS prompt with CD support. I then ran FDISK and made a DOS primary partition. I then went and formatted the new drive C. The setup started correctly, but I ran into some problems. I will post some screenshots of every step I did so you can see what went wrong and help me.
