Hi,

I am currently running Windows XP Professional and i would like to run Windows 3.1 or 3.11 side by side.

I have 3.1 and 3.11 on floppy and wish to install either so i can use one of them.

I have a 60Gb HD and want to know how to go about this change.

Should i buy a small HD just for 3.1/3.11 and install some form of boot manager?
Is there another way?

Can someone please help me with this problem!

Thanks!

jdal,

How many partitions are there on your HD now? And what's the file system (NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, etc)?

Blue Lightning,

WHY CAN NOT he do that? That's totally possible and can be done easily. DOS/Win3.x can be installed on almost any computer. Why 386 50MHz??

"You must have either a seperate partition or seperate drive to install MS-DOS and Windows 3.X on. Im not even gonna bother on how to tell you all the steps."

Please don't give false information here!

Well, 3 things:

1. As Blue Lightning says, you need separate partitions to install DOS and Win31.

2. Win31 won't work on a modern machine...I have a Compaq Presario 6000 (year 2002) and Windows 98 won't detect the video card, sound card, modem, or nothing I have installed...imagine 3.1...

3. If u still wanna do this, these are the steps:
1. Make a new UNFORMATTED partition with Partition Magic, or whatever u wanna use.
Note: DO NOT make the partitions FAT16 or FAT32, do it with DOS...
2. Format the partitions with DOS.
3. Install DOS.
4. Install Windows (I recommend 3.11...)

Now, to uninstall it just delete the partition...
Bye!

I believe Poster 4 didn't see my response before replying!

Windows 3.1 will surely work on modern machines! Without certain hardware (e.g. WinModem) support maybe. But I think jdal just wants to see how Win3.1 works, so perhaps it doesn't matter.

"Note: DO NOT make the partitions FAT16 or FAT32, do it with DOS..."

Wrong! DOS supports FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32, why not make it FAT16 or FAT32?

If the WinXP partition is FAT12/16/32, DOS/Win3.x can be installed in the same partition as WinXP.

If Drive C: is in NTFS, then you should NOT install DOS directly. Boot from a real floppy or a virtual floppy to DOS and start Win3.x, or use a partition manager.

i dual boot with win XP Home Edition and dos 7.1 with Win 3.11. what i did is wiped everything off my HD.
i partitioned my HD my windows XP CD, i created C: with Fat 32 (as soon as the XP cd created the fat 32 partition RESTART your computer strait away or itll start installing win XP), then i installed Dos 7.1 and win 3.11. i created another partition with win XP Cd and installed XP on D:.
i recommend u do this cause it runs great and because win XP is fat 32 win 3.11 can access XP's files. :)

Who's giving false information? i missed that!

I already have my 18month old PC that has pre-installed XP Professional.

I cannot wipe my HD and start again as i do not have any discs for XP or most of my sortware including my full Office 2000 Professional pack which i dont have on disc!

Is my only way to go about this change to be buying a new hard drive and installing it as a second drive dedicated to running Dos and 3.11? I have Dos 5.0 and 6.22 on disc, and then i assume get some boot manager software?

My PC detals are as follows, ask for more if needed!
The computer has an AMD Athlon 1800+ XP Processor, with 512Mb Ram with a 60Gb HD.
The drive is not partitioned.
My filing system is NTFS

Any more suggestions?

jdal,

It was Blue Lightning who gave offensive message with false information, which was soon deleted.

Since your 60GB HD is all in NTFS, if you don't want to convert the partition to FAT32, then you have to buy a new (probably empty) HD, and install DOS 7.1 and WIN 3.11 on a FAT32 or FAT16 partition as Tyler_d said above. More information:

Thanks for that!

Let me get this right! i buy a new drive, and install it, then install Dos to it, then from there install 3.11 to the same drive. then this would then allow me to access 3.11?

Would this mean i wouldnt need a boot manager?

Whats this about FAT16, im not familiar with filing systems and how to change them.

Can i ask, why Dos 7.1? i have 5.0 and 6.22 already, are these not suitable?

thanks for all your help!

DOS6xx and earlier only support FAT16 - which is limited to partitions of about 2GB

"Would this mean i wouldnt need a boot manager?"

If you buy a new HD, then you don't need a boot manager to install DOS/Win3.x. Not necessary at all.

For the new features in DOS 7.1 since older versions of DOS, please read this:

http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/whatsnew.htm

But of course, you can use older versions of DOS as well if you want, though they have many limitations.

I have 2 words:
Bochs x86

I currently run Windows 1.0/2.0/3.0/3.1/Workgroups/NT 3.1/NT 4.0 on Bochs on my machine with WinXP.

The only thing is that you have to know about how to set up hard-disk on the emulator and use DOS to set them up and then install the systems. Bochs is a safe way of running on running operating systems within XP (Or Win98 in my laptop)
