I know there is a way to run Windows 3.11 without actually installing it. It's posible to run it off a cd. Does anyone have any clue on how to do this?

Hi Rocco MCP: This is just a guess, but to my knowledge you need to install Win 3.1 or 3.11 after you install DOS to a hard drive. When you install the OS on your system it is "custom" to that machine (unless you have identical machines setup with the same components) installing drivers, fonts, dlls, *.exe files, & so on. If you have a LS 120 floppy as a slave unit you might be able to get a:\ to install your OS to it, but it will run extremely slow. Since I don't have a CD-RW drive (don't even know if it would work on Win 3.11) if there was a way you could get it to read/write like floppy or hard drive from DOS it "might" work (unknown). Other options are try using multiple OS software like System Commander to install more than 1 OS on hard drive (you may need to make sure hard drive is using FAT 16, not FAT 32 or might not work) which you pick at startup. One last way is to use a removable hard drive bay to change hard drives for different OS's, like having seperate PCs.
Good luck. Z

I believe that you are referring to the overall process of "Network Workstation" install: If you run windows setup with the /? switch, it explains things a little. The caper is to setup windows as administrator, let it think that it is going onto a network server. and it will NOT make an operable copy, but just expand every single file from the floppies into your nominated directory. This is the large chunk which "lives" on the CD or network drive. It is from that copy that you setup an operable system onto your local HDD. This local section only has WIN.COM, a few .INI files, and any user customisation files and is therefore quite small. The system will utilise the "Network" (or CD) copy of fonts, applications, program manager etc. Check out the .TXT files on your WIN 3.11 setup disks for full details, they've got quite a lot of info in them. I have set up W311 as a network install to D:\WINSET and then setup several copies to run with different layouts: ie one in C:\WINJOHN, another in C:\WINJACK etc. You have to switch your PATH statements for this to work, the "Network" copy and whichever "Workstation" copy you wish to be active must BOTH be in the PATH. E-Mail me at ßaldy@ozxpress.com.au if you get stuck.
