Recovering RAM after exiting program

Sometimes when i exit a program, such as a browser or a graphic reader-editor, Windows doesn't recover the RAM memory that should have been freed. The only way to recover it is to exit Windows and restart. Is there a utility out there that would let me recover that freed memory without having to restart Windows? A RAM manager of some kind? I would also want to know what is a "ram doubler" and if i could use it on my 486dx2/66. I have 20 Megs RAM. Thanks in advance!

You can try the Ram Doubler for Win3.x from my Yahoo briefcase:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/prestonlewis

open the public folder and download the "RAM Doubler for Win 3"

The best Memory recovery utility is RAMBOOSTER. It works on Win 9x and is absolutely great if you configure it correctly. On the same note, you would not have problems such as this if you use Win NT instead of Win 9x (Just think, nobody need Norton Utils when it's cheaper to upgrade the OS)

I like Rambooster too, but it won't be much use to this guy, as he's using W3.xx. NT wouldn't be much use either if he wanted to ensure all his DOS-based games still worked, even if he WAS using W95!

I must say i'm impressed. Pretty good little program you got there Preston. I tested it to the limit, opening lots of big programs and two browsers with several windows, and i could still navigate with ease even though i was at the system's memory limits. Then i closed everything down and all the memory freed up perfectly. Thank you very much, best addition i made to my system in a while!

Lightspeed.

Thanks for letting me know. I've never used it myself. Just stumbled onto it at a thrift store one day and posted it so others could try it out. Nice to know it works.
