I am trying to reboot an old computer for my kids. I had re-fomatted the HD. Trying to reload win3.1. Says it needs a format #. I tried all the #'s on the back of the computer. I have the master disk and the 2 master cd's. Just don't know how to get around the format #. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave: When you format your hard drive it clears all data (unless you unformat before changing any data on drive), so you need to install DOS OS (from version 5 through 6.22 if you have it) first then Win 3.1. The DOS install is needed to run 3.1 (which runs on top of DOS). You boot up your PC using the #1 (of 3) floppy disk of DOS to run the install program, then run memmaker for memory management setup, then run Win 3.1 install, & finally you need to make sure you have win command in autoexec.bat (use sysedit.exe in Windows directory to make changes. If you don't have the win command at bottom of autoexec.bat you'll have to type win @ c:\ prompt (c:\win) to start windows.
Good luck. Z

You could go to: http://members.rogers.com/oldos/os.html and download DOS 6.22. A bit of overkill (compared to 5.0), but it will work.
