This question is aimed at all the tweak freaks out there, like myself. :)

I run Windows for Workgroups 3.11 over 95's DOS (7.1) via the OSR2fix patch. I would like to set up a 32 MB RAMDrive while running WfW 3.11, which I will most likely use for browser cache. My question is the following:

Should I use the RAMDRIVE.SYS included in WfW 3.11 or the one from Windows 95?

If it matters, I do not use 32-bit disk access or Win32s, but I do load SmartDrv prior to loading WfW. I also do not use a swap file, since my RAM is far more than sufficient (actually maxed) for WfW 3.11. I might even try using more than one RAMDrive if the performace works out as well as I think it will. Thanks in advance.

Xmsdsk might be a better choice

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Thanks for the link, jboy.

I haven't tried XMSDSK.

Way back when, I used "Nifty James' Ram Disk".

Thanks for the link. While looking through the readme.txt of XMSDSK, I get the impression that it hasn't been tested on DOS 7.1. More specifically, I'd want to be certain that it has no problems in a FAT32 environment. The ability of XMSDSK to create a FAT16 RAMDisk beyond 32 MB (and resize) certainly intrigues me, though.

I just recently set up a dos ramdisk for my Geoworks swapfile, and i used a freeware utility called 'turbodisk'..works really well, and was a snap to set up and load (all the best paramaters are in the defaults, you just have to enter the ramdisk size) i like it much better than the MS one..i think either simtel ot tucows have it ..
i think it's listed as tdsk203.zip..should be able to find it OK....

Correction...the archive is tdsk23.zip ..still don't remember which site i got it, but i'm almost sure it was simtel...
Regarding your other points, currently i have it sized as a 42 meg ramdisk (it goes up to 64 MB, as i understand it..), and it is working just fine for me on a Dos 7.1 Fat32 partition....

I am now using XMSDSK and it seems to be working like a charm. I definitely like having the option to create larger RAMDrives with this. I also like how it uses just 688 bytes of memory. This is definitely worth keeping.

However, I am still curious to see how its performance compares with RAMDRIVE.SYS, despite its limitations. Can both XMSDSK and RAMDRIVE.SYS be used simultaneously, or am I just messing with Pandora's box here? Should I use the RAMDRIVE.SYS from WfW 3.11 or 95, given my setup? Thanks again.
