So far, this is the longest post that I posted in the Computing.net forum.

I've been testing the Qemu IA-32 PC Emulator for Win32. Most of my current Bochs configurations were tested on the new system. For the Qemu developers, this list will be interesting in that it will show the status of the software that can run on the emulator. I'm posting this in the Windows 3.1 forum because running Windows 3.1 on an emulator is now a vaiable option and the increase use of emulation to run classic software (You can throw away your classic beige box 486 now, even though I'm not. My IBM has MS-DOS v5.0 in ROM). Windows 3.1 runs on Bochs. (Otherwise, I wouldn't be posting this).

DOS Applications (Same as in Bochs, but becasue Qemu uses a different x86 decoder, DOS apps run a lot faster). Doom has nt been tested yet.

Windows v1.x (Not tested, but should run. If it does run, it will probably be faster than Bochs).

Windows v2.x (Not tested, but should run. If it does run, it will probably be faster than Bochs).

Windows 386 v2.1(Runs without problems. Can run DOS window sessions. I've already tried Lotus 123 release 2.2)

Windows 3.0 (Runs without problems in 386 enhanced mode. Should run in Real and Standard Mode).

Windows 3.1/Workgroups (Runs without problems in 386 enhanced mode. Emulator hates standard mode when audio emulation is enabled and Soundblaster drivers are loaded. Sound does not work. The Windows 3.1 drivers for the Cirrus Logic will NOT work with the emulator. I'm waiting for the Cirrus Logic VGA BIOS emulation to improve before I try again. VPC is the preferred emulator).

Windows 95 Release 1 (Not tested, but should run. VPC is the preferred emulator.)

Windows 95 OSR2, Win98/SE, ME, XP (Not tested and not going to test them either).

Desqview/X (Runs fine with default window manager. Motif and Open Look will not run).

Windows NT 3.1 (For some reason, my version of the emulator doesn't support ctrl-alt-del)

Windows NT 3.5/4.0/2000/XP-Not tested, and not going to be tested (At least not by me anyway). VPC is the preferred emulator.

OS/2 v1.0 Not tested
OS/2 v1.1 Tested, crashes emulator
OS/2 v1.2 TRAP Error
OS/2 v1.3 Displays "TRA_" and does nothing.
OS.2 v2.0,v2.1 Shows country.sys Device missing (Worked well on VPC)
OS/2 Warp 3 Shows Logo Screen. Does nothing.
OS/2 Warp 4 Beta Tested and Works (The Cirrus Logic CL-5446 Drivers for theemulated video card do not work. The only supported resoltuion is 640 by 480 16 colors. Win-OS/2 runs with window DOS and OS/2 sessions).

Qemu can already run the vast majority of the software on this page, and the emulator is only in Alpha stage!. The emulation is so good that Win3.1 goes too fast to the point were the mouse is hard to control

Happy emulation

Nice post.

"Windows 3.1/Workgroups (Runs without problems in 386 enhanced mode. Emulator hates standard mode when audio..."

Win3.0 was the last that would run in real or 286 (selector) mode. No wonder it has problems. I think it was too bad they spent all that code effort on the 286. Oh maybe i forget and 3.1 would run in selector. No i remember now ... i could only upgrade a 286 to 3.0 ... no further. And it stuck in crumby EGA.

Best

Actually, Windows 3.0 was the last version that supported real mode. Windows 3.0,3.1,and Workgroups supported standard mode. Win3.0 didn't have audio or multimedia support (at least without the multimedia extensions). My audio drivers worked fine in Win3.1 Standard Mode on VPC

The Standard Mode in Windows does seem kind of pointless. It was a vast improvement over real mode (Standard mode could still only support full-screen DOS session, but all Windows programs run in protected mode). It is no match for 386 enhanced mode.

Real Mode in Win3.0. No wonder why Window Users kept getting the "Out of Memory" Error. All DOS and Windows programs and proccesses have to fit in the 640KB barrier.

Goodbye Real Mode=).
I enjoy reading feedback. It what made Computing.net great=)
