Hi everyone-
Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem- I can't seem to be able to send out mail anymore using the yahoo mail service. I've been using it for a long time too, and this has never happened. I use win 3.1 and netscape 4.08 when using yahoo mail. Anyone else having this problem? Did you fix it? I contacted Yahoo but they were no help.

They likely don't support a 4.x browser now. I had to give up on 3.x browsers (specifically Navigator 3.04) for their mail page about a year ago. They recently changed their page format (again) and that's likely when they dropped support for 4.x browsers...

You could try IE5 16bit?, as TRA states they changed a lot of hidden page coding which checks for browser compatibility, I found this Login page which may revert the Mail Box to the older standard if that is the problem:

Thanks (hiho & TRS) for the info and tips- damnit! if yahoo has made changes that won't support NS 4.08!!. I've always used netscape because I had problems accessing that service with my other browsers. I know opera 3.62 is totally useless, but not sure what IE 5.0 does anymore. I'll have to try that again. And I'll try that address too. Thanks.

I just sent myself a test e-mail from both Netscape Navigator 3.04 Gold and Communicator 4.08 on Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Both were sent successfully. I have never had any problems using Yahoo Mail with Netscape 3.0 and higher and numerous other browsers. Since it's not the browser, I suspect a couple possibilities:

1. My account was recently upgraded to 1 GB of storage. Perhaps your account is in a transition stage? Or...

2. The recipient has your e-mail filtered or blocked.

I am more likely to suspect the latter, even if it is unintentional.

Interesting Glitchman. Here's exactly what I'm doing and what happens after I hit the "send" button (by the way, I think I have had the 1 GB service for some time now and successfully sent out mail with it):

1) open the compose window or open a reply window
2) type my message
3) hit send
4) all the fields go blank, and my computer freezes up. Nothing will get me out of this except typing in a new address in the location field and hitting return (or rebooting). I have tried using the refresh button too, but that's no help.

So, any thoughts?

Something similar used to happen on mine (almost a year ago or so) with the blank screen coming up after scanning attachments, but I never experienced freezes. A few months later or so, the problem went away. It might have had something to do with how Yahoo detects the browser and whether or not to give the "enhanced" version, which requires fairly recent browsers, or the old version, compatible with almost all browsers.

In the meantime, you might try disabling Javascript in Edit - Preferences - Advanced to see if you can "force" Yahoo Mail to realize you're on a 4.x browser. Oddly enough, I cannot "convince" Yahoo Mail to serve the old style pages on Opera, even when identifying the user agent string as Netscape 3.0 and disabling meta refresh....

If that doesn't work, delete your cookies.txt file and/or clear your cache to see if that fixes it.

Hi Glitchman-
I think you're right. I think yahoo is having problems detecting what browser I'm using. Because there's more funny stuff happening now. I get a different start screen (you know the screen that shows my list of folders) than I used to have and now the inbox screen isn't right anymore either (there's stuff missing) and the delete option doesn't work now.

I tried all your suggestions but they didn't help. Anything else I can try? Thanks much.

I had a look thru various postings here and in other forums and it appears that you may need a non-standard browser to revert back to the older style YAHOO MAILBOX. You could try ARACHNE WEB BROWSER for DOS:

Wow hiho!! Thanks for digging around! Really appreciate that (were you bored or something?). I will definitely look into your suggestion. I also contacted Yahoo again and asked them how to get the old yahoo mail version to come up- maybe they will have something useful to say now too.
Thanks!

Sometimes when I sign in, I get a message similar to the following:

---
Yahoo! may not be optimized for the web browser you are using. Your options are:

Upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape 7.1, or Safari 1.2.
Switch back to the Yahoo! version supported by your current browser.
---

Clicking the "Switch back..." link always fixes it for me whenever it comes up. Since you're using Netscape Communicator 4.08, I can think of a few other options to try out, though they may be long shots:

1. Log in as usual, but then disable cookies in Edit - Preferences - Advanced and click some links. This might make Yahoo Mail realize there's an incompatibility.

2. Keep Javascript enabled but disable CSS. Again, worth a shot.

3. Right click links and open them in Composer instead or click File - Edit page to open them in Netscape Composer. I sometimes find that opening links in Netscape's HTML editor will get me into sites that otherwise aren't working.

Sooner or later, something should work. Since I can get into Yahoo Mail even with a Lynx browser, I know that almost anything is possible (except perhaps a cookie-unaware browser like NCSA Mosaic.)

Hi Glitchman-
Okay, that "switch back.." link never shows up anymore, so I can't click on that. Tried disabling cookies, and when I did, yahoo mail stopped and gave me a message telling me to turn them on again or I wouldn't be able to use yahoo mail. I tried composer too, but that didn't work. And your last suggestion- disable CSS- I couldn't find anything called CSS in the options under preferences. What does CSS stand for? Thanks.

Hiho- I think NS 4.08 is considered to be a non-standard browser, so getting another one, probably won't help.

CSS = cascading style sheets

In Communicator, it's Edit - Preferences - Advanced - Enable style sheets.

I am rather surprised that disabling Javascript alone does not fix the problem in your case. I recently logged into my account with a Lynx browser so I could quickly identify the code that Yahoo uses to redirect browsers to the "old" version of Yahoo Mail. You may want to copy-paste the following URL into Netscape after you logged into Yahoo Mail (with Javascript disabled):

http://us.f317.mail.yahoo.com/ym/login?nojs=1

Hopefully that will bring you to a page that has a link to "Switch back to the old version."

Something has to work.

Hey Glitchman-
I've been a bit pre-occupied with some personal stuff so had to let my yahoo problem slide (that's why I haven't been posting)...Anyway, first off, yahoo mysteriously started loading the old version of it's mail program a few days back (!)- at least I think it's the old version, because *almost* everything is back to normal- but I have no explanation for this. I don't think it's because of anything I tried. I still can't send out mail though (I get the same problem as before). So, today I tried all your new suggestions, but that didn't help any.

I hate to give up on yahoo cause it offers so much storage and -was- the best email program I had. I'm really stuck though.

If all else fails, there is always telnet (assuming you have some sort of telnet software installed.) There are some remote sites out there that you can telnet into and surf using a Lynx browser on their end.

I have also had success logging into Yahoo Mail using Bobcat Lynx 386 for DOS. Gmail now works in Lynx as well.
