installed a 16x cd-rom read the drive fine, but then froze and after rebooting, this error comes up after loading mouse at start up...
bad or missing c:\windows\ES1868.com
error in config.sys line 1

I'm only guessing, and making a broad assumption, but it looks like you had an ESS 1868 chipset on your sound board. Unfortunately, I cannot prove/disprove that, since I've never used creative or ESS chipsets.

Either re-install your soundcard drivers, or see if you can find that file on your driver disc and put it in the c:\windows directory, where the file apparently was at one time. That is, if you still have a soundcard.
