Pre Win 3.0 display problems

I've been trying to load Windows 1.04, 286, and 386 on an old computer, and have the same problem with all of them. It gets to the sign-on screen, then starts beeping and displaying garbage without ever getting into Windows.
I've tried this on several different computers, even one where I could swear it once worked, and get the same problem each time. Is it possibly something to do with having too advanced a Video card? I'm using a VGA with 1MB, but might be able to dig up an older one if necessary. Or is it something else entirely?
It might be the video - VGA didn't hit the market until '87, Windows 1 & 2 predate that. VGA should be backward compatible with CGA & EGA video modes, but it's hard to say.
Another consideration might be memory management - most of those were written for versions of DOS that managed memory a bit differently than DOS5+.
Just guessing though, haven't had any experience with anything earlier than 3.0

What DOS version do you use? - when too new version is used, these Windows start to beep and the in the garbage will be written : "Incorrect DOS Version". Try to read the garbage on the blue screen and if it says that... in most cases DOS 5.0 is sufficient, but the older, the better.

Yeah!! I had that problem too!! I'm gonna try an older DOS version... :)
I expirienced the same problem, so I used PC/MS-DOS 3.3 and the problems went away. VGA by default is backward compatible with the EGA standard, which IS supported by Windows 1.x. Windows 2.x has support for VGA.
