Comment:

Please help we have a user at our company who is unable to produce a pound symbol on her keyboard. The operating system is Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. I have checked the obvious things like the layout of the keyboard and also currency settings, in which there is box with a pound symbol already in it. This would indicate that the symbol should be available. Is this something that should be installed from the CDROM?

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that instead of a pound symbol what is produced is a hash sign instead. However I have printed this off just to see whether when printed it prints as a pound symbol. It still does not.

Sounds to me like you need to load COUNTRY.SYS and KBUK.SYS in MS-DOS

In Autoexec.Bat add -

keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys

in Config.Sys add -

Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

Sorry you are using MS-DOS & WfWG

Change C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND to read C:\DOS

Settings in first message was for Windows 95

As a temporary solution i.e. hold down the alt key whilst typing 1 then 5 then 6 on the numeric keypad, gives the £ symbol as soon as the Alt key is released. You may need to turn NumLock on first by hitting the NumLock (also labelled 'PF2' and 'Page' on my keyboard.

You need Kbduk.dll installed in your c:\windows\system and the kb layout settings in INTERNATIONAL section of the CONTROL PANEL set to kb layout: UK.

I searched a bit for it but didn,t find the dll. If you have other computers running wfw 3.11 and they work, you should have the dll there. Copy it to disket and put it in the system dir of affected computer.

KBUK.DLL & COUNTRY.SYS are MS-DOS 6.22 Files and are NOT part of Windows at all. That is why thet should be in the C:\DOS Directory!

READ MY MESSAGE! They are MS-DOS Commands.

"TRY THIS", DOS keyboard set up doesn't translate to windows 3.1. If you want a particular keyboard set up to work in windows, it has to be SET UP IN WINDOWS! You can actually have different set ups in DOS and in WINDOWS. I switch from french to english and back all the time, i should know. It took me a while to get my windows to work in french because i didn't have the right dll installed. Setting up french kb in dos was easy enough, but didn't work in windows!

Thank you for your help.

Some of our keyboards in work were
never really setup for Windows they are old I think. As a temporary solution I will try "Response Number 5's" temporary solution and then later on what you suggested about Kbuk.dll.

Thank you.

Correction on answer #6, setup in CONTROL PANEL, INTERNATIONAL, sould be BRITISH, not UK, sorry. Windows is going to ask you for a disk with KBDUK.DLL (not KBUK.DLL). Use the browse to direct windows to it (wherever you put it, windows will copy it to c:\windows\system). Good luck.

Hello Lightspeed.

In response to your last comments, are you still referring to Windows 3.11 for Workgroups?

I refer you to post one where Zara states that she has already set windows control panel to BRITISH. And the pound (£) symbol. I say again that you need to map the Keyboard under MS-DOS first................

I live in the UK and this is a commen problem with Windows 3.1x With Windows 95 onwards it is indeed as you say a Windows setup, with MS-DOS 'Real Mode' needing to be setup only for the DOS Prompt, But not so in 3.1x where DOS & Windows 'WORK TOGETHER'

MS-DOS has a default setup for the USA Keyboard which is about 98% the same as the UK Keyboard other than the location of the £ $ # @ and ~ symbols. If you do not change this setting to INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH and BRITISH when installing MS-DOS then the incorrect settings are carried forward to Windows 3.1x as well. You still need to correct this at the Windows Setup to ensure the UK settings have been accepted.

I say no more on this subject.

You do not need Keyboard or Codepage Support to be active in MS-DOS to use it in Windows 3.1 However it is a good idea to load it if you use any DOS based programs (Even if from within Windows)

To enable UK Keyboard Support -
Open International within Control Panel
Check the following settings for UK users:

Country - United Kingdom
Language - English (International)
Keyboard Layout - British
Measurment - can be Metric or English

You can change the currancy symbol to UK Pound (£) in the lower box, but if the above settings are not correct, then the US Doller ($) or Hash (#) sign may be displayed instead)

If you are still having problems you may have the wrong keyboard listed in Windows Setup.
Exit Windows, and open Windows Setup from the C:\Windows Directory. (Type SETUP and press Enter from the DOS prompt)
Check that you have Enhansed 101 or 102 key US or Non US Keyboard as your default keyboard. (Unless you have a Non-Standard Keyboard) and check settings as listed above for Control Panel.

This should set your Codepage to British English (437)

Have your WFWG install disks ready to load if needed (If you change a setting)
