There are 5 kinds of modems that can be added (1) internal - probably not applicable (2) USB - probably not applicable (3) parallel port - rare to find (4) pcmcia card - one available choice (5) external serial modem - another choice
Depending upon you operating system you may have a problem with finding drivers for a pcmcia modem.
So I would recommend an external serial modem. However it is the bulkiest solution. But you would have the least problems with it. Price would run from $30-120. I've bought new 56K ones for $30. Clearance sale.
I've also got combo pcmcia 3COM (USR) 33.6K modem and net card for $9.22.
Shop around, if used make sure that you get all cables and software.

External 56k serial modems can be had for $10-$15 on eBay. Get a Zoom or a USR. Make sure it is a DSP hardware modem (can be used on 486)and not a winmodem that requires windows 9x & a pentium cpu. Also, I'm not sure how hold you r thinkpad is but it needs to have a 16550 UART serial port in order to use high speed modems.
