I had a pentium laptop running windows 95 with a swappable vd/floppy drive. I reformatted it and then went to reinstall 95 but it wont realize i have a cd drive so I tried to install 3.1 and then upgrade from that so I had teh 8 disk set for 3.1 but after the 6 disk it said i was done then to reboot and at dos type win. I do that and i get nothing. I have no idea what to do please can sombody please help me.

Gee, that was a wrong move. There are a couple methods now: pull the HDD and put in a desktop machine (need an adaptor), then copy the win95 folder from the win95 cd onto the HDD and put it back in the laptop. Boot with 95 floppy and CD WIN95 then SETUP
You must install DOS 6.22 BEFORE win3.11. And DOS 6.22 is all that is needed if you had the driver for your vd.
Copy files with network or parallel port.
Good luck.

So what you are saying is there is no way for me to get it to reckognize the cd drive unless i hook it up to a desktop and do all that stuff you said? So what if i install 6.22 and then install 3.1 can i do it without hooking it up to a desktop then?

NO! NO! NO!
You need to boot with a floppy and SYS the hard drive, then you need to install CD Drive drivers.
Switch off and swap to the CD drive, reboot and at the C:\_ prompt it will state the CD drive letter.
Follow the procedure outlined in the first steps of this page, for the two WinImages you will require to make the floppies.

Ok, if you have the cd-rom drivers from above then proceed as stated EXCEPT if you have Win95a: when you run FDISK DO NOT allow large hard drive support. This makes FDISK create FAT16 partition maximum 2 GB.
If you have Win95 osr2 or osr3 you can use large drive support (FAT32).
The idea is to get the HDD to boot into DOS without a floppy and running the CD-ROM driver. If sucessfull: you can just turn on the machine and you will get the C:\> prompt.
While the machine is turned off, switch to the CD-ROM drive. Then boot.
You will see the cd-rom drive letter flashed on the display during boot.
Once this is so: put your Win95 CD in the drive and at the C:\> prompt key in:
D:\Win95\setup
Where D was your cdrom drive letter.

a simple way to install windows 95 with a swappable CD-ROM and floppy drive would be like this..95 a full version and on'
with a formatted drive, using the floppy drive first.I made a boot disk that will install most cd rom drivers to c drive and made the c drive bootable, than just turn pc off and replace the floppy with the cd rom and boot pc.and then go to the drive letter that it asign for the cd-rom and run setup...simple

"how do I sys teh hardive I tried to do teh c: format s\ thing but it says wrong version of dos??"
Daniel you obviously did not read the page I linked too.........
