My pc was completely dead with bad power supply and I just replaced it. Now it won't boot. when I turn on the power ,the PS and cpu fan start. Also the hard drive and cd rom light blink. I can hear the hard drive starting. I don't see the lights on the keyboard and floppy come on. I tried booting from a floppy bit that doesn't work. It seems like the bios isnt even initializing the floppy drive. The moitor powers up but that is about it. I dont get any bios screen or text. No beeps either. I tested all the voltages to the Motherboard and drives with a multimeter. They all have sufficient power from the supply. I swapped cmos battries too. I know the hard drive works fine because I plugged it into my xp machine to pull off data I needed. Can anyone help me? thanks

Keyboard failing to light up, no 'ready' beep - not encouraging.

Best bet would be to disconnect all drives etc. and see if you can get to the POST (Power On Self Test) screen. If you're unable to get that, pretty hard to proceed.

Hey jboy it looks like we are becoming pin pals. You are probably wondering why i havent taken a hammer to the old thing yet. I unplugged all the drives and pulled cards and still nothing. I put in a post card reader and it gave me the code "00" This usually means the CPU is fried according to my post test card manual. If you want to sell your old mobo with the ram and cpu, let me know. Or if you know where i can get a replacement that will work too. Thanks

Heh - well, there aren't too many 'regulars' left here on the DOS/Win31 boards.

It is possible that connecting the miswired PSU did damage the board or one of its components - at any rate, I don't believe there's much hope for this one.

The Valuepoint I have has the CPU integrated with the board - but there were a few different models. There is an upgrade socket, but I was never able to get the board to recognize anything but the original processor (486 25MHz).

I'm not sure how it is where you are, but I come across decent Pentium machines put out for trash from time to time. A 2nd hand machine (P166) goes for around $50 (CDN).

While I enjoy getting the older boxes going, they are pretty limited in comparison to even the early Pentium machines.

Good luck

i've come across a few.

also try putin a wanted add in the newspaper
there are people that sell their old machines for cheap. some eaven give away.

But never buy from pawn shops! they overprice. I went to a pawn shop and they wanted $399.99 (CDN) for a p166 with a 4x cd burner win 95 and 32 megs of ram.

Jboy is right about not many "regulars" left here.

Can't you even get in the Bios using [ctrl]-[alt]-[esc] or some other key combination? This machine of yours is very sick indeed lol!

Sorry i can't think of much to help you more at this point. The hammer idea may be the best ;)
