Is there any free software out there that can do a parallel connection between windows 3.1 and 95a? It seems that win 3.1 can't do the "handshake thing" with 95's DCC. In case I was doing everything right, I made a parallel cable from the pinout found at http://www.cablesandconnectors.com/notebookpage.html using the "Parallel Data-Transfer Cable" diagram. Is that the right pinout for what I am looking for? If DCC uses another type of cable pinout, what is it?

Yes - it's the same cable - 'parallel file transfer'.

You may have some success with DOS interlnk, since 95A is FAT16.

Otherwise, you could use the free File Maven for simple file transfers.

Looks like it, here's another:

One thing I alwasy do, because it's easy and I'm used to it, is get the cable working with laplink3 (ll3.exe) You can download it from Mick's powerloads. It will run in DOS, from a floppy, and will enable you to make sure that your ports, and the cable, are all working.

It should run "default" with parallel, but when you bring up the program (on both machines) hit "O" for "OPTIONS" and you can set the port settings and so on.

After you get that working, you can play with other network/linking programs.

Another good way to link older machines, with the same cable, is another one-file linking program from Xtree Gold called xtlink.com. I THINK it is also at Mick's. One machine is the slave, one is the master. Unlike a DOS command, xtlink works like this: When you type "xtlink" it shows the help screen, how to set the ports and whether for serial/parallel.

Incidently, it WILL WORK in Whinedox95--you boot to a C: prompt, load up XTLINK, and then type "win" to go onto winedoz. When everything is loaded and working, the drive(s) of the slave machine are right there in Explorer.

People come here for help, and are not all as proficient at locating help on Google otherwise they would not be here!

You let down an excellant piece of advice with your last comment.

I found some of your links very interesting, so much so I will add then to my PowerLoad pages, so you see we all benefit from Computing.Net

I used the Helmig pages myself a while back, and did not at the time think about linking him. His advice on the differance with WfWG311 - Win31 and DOS Networking is spot on.

If all you want is to transfer files between a Win31 & Win9x LapLink or FastLynx is all you need. You have to use the older 16bit versions without LFN support, but then again none of the solutions given here will enable LFN under Win3x anyway!

I used to carry 2 bootable floppies with FastLynx 2.0 on them, pre-setup to remote transfer via Serial Ports, which talked to each other 99% of the time without prompting.

As a DOS program it uses its own very easy to use split screen menu to highlight and transfer files.

I now use FastLynx for Windows 3.3 (Which comes with 2.01 for DOS)which directly links any version of Windows 3x to XP

For a free copy of FastLynx 2.0 for DOS or a 30 day trail of 3.3 for Windows with the compliments of Sewell Devlopments visit:

No I didn't, just trying to give people a gentle nudge. I'm sure not proficient with boolean search techniques as a couple of my friends.

If we can't have a little fun, here, with a couple of wise-ass cracks, then, what? NOBODY is certainly offering to pay me anything for looking any of this up, so I (we) hafta have a little bit of fun or other recompense, right?

By the way, I'd bet some money, that if you went and hired a "profession" computer tweak, that you STILL would not be guaranteed freedom from a wise remark now and then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, Mick, have you ever tried xtlink? (xtlink.com) It's easier (in my humble opinion) to use than Microshafted "interlink/interserver.)

You run xtlink with no switch, at a dos prompt, and it gives you the "help" prompts at that point.

Then your run it again, with the appropriate switches, to set up the ports, etc.

You do the above from DOS, in your windows9xx machine, using "F8", and when the file is loaded, you then run "win" to get into Windows 9x, and when done proberly, the DOS/ Win3xx machine shows its drives in your Win9x machine's explorer.

I make no charge or wisecreacks either here or at PowerLoad. Nor do I use Web Advertising or any other money making trick! I help becouse I want to ...
I call a spade a spade. and Windows not WinDoze despite the fact I agree its crap....

Yes I have used XTLink and dislike interlink to the point of never again used it or recommend it.

I prefer LapLink/FastLynx because of its ease of use both as an occasional file transfer tool and as an emergancy recovery utility on a bootdisk.

If a Computer Tech were to make more than a 'minor' wise creak in my office he gets shown the door. Like the salesman who answered his mobile during an appountment and started to describe his recent holiday. He could not understand why he left so soon!

Did you hear of the IBM Tech, who was called in to fix a server? Gave it a kick and charged $1,000. When asked to justify his bill, wrote.

To fix IBM AS400 Server. $1.000

Breakdown of costs#

To give it a kick - $1
Knowing where to kick - $999

Have a nice day...

.. ok

LFNs can be preserved in Win31 (after a fashion) in archives, using WinZip6.3

When all is said and done, lots of options.
