Possible with parallel/serial cable.
Use a Laplink type software.

If you are comfortable with your machines.
You can remove the hard drive in the 3.1
machine and temporarily install it in the Presario. Then copy the WIN98 directory from the CD to the hard drive.

You can transfer files to the other PC (and run setup from the files on hard drive) via Parallel Cable look at following:

http://www.briggsoft.com/fmdos.htm
http://joy.sophics.cz/parcp/index.htm
LapLink ProVersion 4.0 from http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/msdos.htm

you can run this software from a W98 OEM boot floppy from www.bootdisk.com

Thanks Wizard-Fred - got Laplink/Fastlynx and will get the cable. If it would be any ot her computer other than my stubborn Compaq yes, clone, yes, I would. But Compaqs are a pain in the rear, hard to get stuff in and out and back configured.

If it would have been my old 533mghz Celeron clone yes, that was so easy to fool with.

Also thanks X86 thought it could be done. I know how to do the setup and install of Win once the files are copied, just getting them there.

I bought 4 believe it or not that came from the City of New Orleans Govt. They didn't bother to wipe the hard drives, they just went into the bios and disabled the "auto" function to make the hard drives run. Therefore, no one bought them because when u turned them on it came up in dos and said "disk failure", they thought they wouldn't work.

Thanks.
