Hi guys,

Quick question, just out of curiosity. Short of having an old computer that can't handle a newer OS, why would you stick with 3.1 or DOS? It is largely nostalgia or is there an underlying functional aspect I'm not aware of?

Thanks!

Not this again - be sure to ask in the Win9x forums - they're obsolete as well.

most of the folks with those old computers are third world, and can't afford more.
or, that old computer is all thats available.
i once saw a store owner buy pallet loads of old 286 laptops, for 20.00 per pallet [50 units per] and sell them to india for 500.00 each, per laptop. what a gold mine.

Am I picking up some sarcasm? It's just a simple question, I'm just trying to learn a little. Thanks.

Can't fool you.

Yeah - every other month that question gets asked, usually out of idle curiosity. If you're that interested, try it for yourself, else look up the many previous responses.

Yes, believe it or not, computers did function before the advent of 9x or XP on some pretty lightweight hardware, and can still be used for most purposes... if you know how.

Well, thanks for your thoughtful commentary. I've looked at the old posts and found nothing but "stop asking this question" posts and other similar animosity. I guess I'll just settle for being another idiot outside the 3.1 Club, which from the posts I read, seems to be a super cool circle of cranky old farts.

So much for innocently trying to learn something.

I personally prefer NT4 (obsolete) to W3.x but the main reasons for using older software is that they rarely crash, load quicker, able to undertake the majority of tasks of newer PC,s just as well.

A perspective on MSDOS and compatible look at:

welcome to the world of interesting and real computing ......... and yes w9x/ME/W2K are all old hat according to M$.

I use programs that are essential to my business that absolutely will not work unless they are run under native DOS...I'm not the only one either.

Some Point of Sale systems worldwide use only MS-DOS; 95, 98 etc. just won't run the software.

Sure thing that some run it for nostalgia but some run it because it's a necessity, some run it just to answer questions on this forum, some run it to have a better understanding of any operating system, and you'll find some who are simply happy with it.

Too many people believe computing started when XP was shipped with their machine. I feel sorry for them...they have no idea what computing is all about.

[end rant]

SkipCox,

Yes, I feel sorry for them. But it's worse than that. Most prople who buy computers don't compute anything.

Another reason for DOS and w3x, or DOS with no w3x, is that it's MUCH faster.

If I needed to do a global recalc on a monster spreadsheet, I wouldn't do it in winders.

Ditto for a serious compile job.

I use win 3.1(1) on older systems because I somewhat prefer its interface to win9x (definatly to xp's "luna" theme, I am running it great on a 3.5 meg. 386sx 16, and a 20Mb. 486dx 50 (not dx2) (I might even be overclocking it to 100Mhz!?) (Just figured out that it wasn't a dx2 today.)

Have you ever tried Windows 3.1 on a Pentium 4 with 1gb memory (or in your case 512)?
Although it will lack video drivers for your card and probably sound drivers, its a hell of a lot faster than anything you've probably seen on a computer before.

Sord, Win 3.1 can't use more than 64Mb. RAM, there may be ways around it though...
