Comment: I've configured my monitor (IBM G42 - Jan 98) as VGA and only get 16 colours. Every time I set up as something else (256 colours) the computer throws a complete wobbler and I have to reinstall. What should I do?

Reply: (edit)I had that problem before too. It might be that the video card or the monitor do not support that many colors. When it happened to me it was the monitor that went bonkers when I tried to put 256 colors at a certain resolution. Maybe if you can change the resolution it might work but I do not guarantee it.

Reply: (edit)Choose at windows setup VGA 256 colors, if that isnt listed there, then your video card is not 256 colors compatible

Reply: (edit)You need a different driver. You can get a generic svga driver for 256 colors at Powerload's Win 3.x Resource Page It is called svga.exe and you need a video card with at least 512kb of memory. If this still doesn't work, get the info about your video card using MSD.EXE (type MSD [ENTER] at the Dos prompt, then click Video), then go to the Drivers section of my page and get the specific driver for your video card. HTH.

Reply: (edit)svga.exe does not work for all but a few models of video cards, monitors etc. If it fails your only choice is to hunt down the proper video drivers for your Video Card, Monitor, Etc and install those, an example is the very machine im posting this response with, it will not work with svga.exe and required its factory drivers to display 256 colors and above.
