anybody know of a msn compatible messenger program? I've heard that an old version of trillian should have worked under windows 3.1, but I've only found it for 32-bit windows (I've found down to 0.5)

Hi, I also heard that there was an old Trillian version that ran on Win3.x but could never find it. I also remember someone was working on a VisualBasic version for 3.1 or something but no idea where that went. I gave up in the end and just use 98 - but if anybody does know of a Messenger app for 3.1 id like to know :)
Alex

Jon3.1: website doesn't exist :(
Alex&CK: AOL Instant Messenger has versions out for Win3.1x; I believe that MSN Messenger once allowed you to include friends from your AOL-IM friends list (but I think that feature may have been removed in the newer versions of the program).

www.oldversion.com does exist and has msn messengers. Common mistake is oldversion(s) unstead of oldversion. I just copied over 400meg of oldies last nite for old pc's to put on a backup cd.

well... I copied the adress exactly from response #2 and got to some site saying "This page is a place holder for your future web site
http://ensim.rackshack.net/"
I don't know if you can add MSN contacts to AIM or ICQ (though I suppose not as each company want all customers) but I want some program to be able to chat with all my MSN contacts in WfW3.11
as for using another version of windows... sure, I'm using XP, ME, 98 and WfW3.11 (as well as QNX and Lindows 3 for non-MS OS's) for the moment (and will probably add more), but I'm just very curious to see MSN Messenger in 3.11.

www.oldversion.com has been hacked, apparently, probably by some dubious M$ consort sycophantic ally. Should be up again soon (todays date: 29/2/03).
I have scoured the net, and all I could come up with, in the form of messengers, was A0L's AIM, Excite PAL, mIRC 5.91 & other IRC clients, ICQ 3.111, for which you need the correct dialler* (Trumpet Winsock, old Shiva dialler, old ver. of Netscape 3.0/2.0/? dialler) to get this to work, not the one that comes with M$IE 5.0-4.0 :( ... although I hear the IE3.0 dialler works....and finally the Java version of Yahoo Messenger, which runs appalingly, if you can get it to run in the first place.
Any chance of someone doing an OpenSource/GNU/public domain version of Yahoo or M$N messengers? You will go down in history as the one who cheated Billy G. out of another million or two.
Anyone posessing a working version of Odigo or Trillian for Win3.x, could you please email it to me, and I can host the download for all of us to enjoy.
(*)note: In Australia, we spell dialler as.. um..dialler.. ;-)

hmm.. "Any chance of someone doing an OpenSource/GNU/public domain version of Yahoo or M$N messengers?"... I think I'll try that a year from now, when I've done the internet programming course in school (if someone hasn't already done it by then, that is)

Well it appears someone has already thought about making such a program, but like i said before, i dont know where that got to. Read this thread:
http://computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/7627.html

I can go to site 2 fine. If you want I can email you whichever version you want of this list.
MSN Messenger
1.0 324KB
2.0 346KB
2.2 370KB
3.0 647KB
3.5 753KB
3.6 754KB
4.5 1,676KB

It was me who suggested MSN for 3.1x in the thread.
It seems someone who doesnīt like my (argumented) opinion about Java has misused my name in the last post number 14, which wasnīt mine.
Unlike him/her I still try to find solutions for common problems which will help people here in stead of just critisizing and ridiculizing....
I havenīt found a solution for MSN until now, but I do have some (new) suggestions.A Windows 9x program called Easy Messenger shows that all messaging protocols can be done within a small and simple program. I havent tested yet but theirīs even a very small possibility this program will work in 3.1x (with win32s).
Another suggestion is a new Java (yuk;-) messenger called JavaMessenger_0.999b.zip
I still havent tried, but maybe this or the other Java messenger called JMSN.exe will work together with the IBM Java SDK.
I hope some other people (who do have time;-) will try to test too.....

Hi again,
Soedesh - do you mean Easy Messenger, as you typed, or Easy Message? Because I searched for it and only found Easy Message, a multi-client IM for MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ.

Yes its Easy Messenger. I donīt think it will work with 3.1x, although I haven`t tried until now...

You could go to: http://bis.midco.net/dgkdrk/ and download either (both?):
Trillian version 0.61 which may be a 16 bit program, file name trillian-v0.61-n.exe
or, ViRC version 0.90 which is described as Chat over the Internet in a CB radio style setting. Automation, IRC primer included. This is Supposedly a 16 bit program for Win3.x and is under the file name virc090.zip

Well i couldn't find Easy Message anywhere for download :(
Like i said I did find Easy Messenger, I tried this on Win3.11 on Virtual PC with Win32s installed but it just crashed to DOS after displaying some error box - but then I haven't had much luck with Win32s when running Win3.11 on VPC.Alex

Alex: I also tried using Win32s on WfW3.11 under Virtual PC... tested the game Freecell that comes with Win32s... crash to DOS... so my guess is that its an incompaibility between Win32s and Virtual PC (somebody, correct me if I'm wrong).
Hammermill: ViRC sounds like an IRC client, and trillian 0.61 seems to be a 32-bit program (as win32s throws up an error message right before the Virtual machine freezes)

Sorry about that ck. I forgot that someone above had mentioned that even version 0.5 of trillian was 32-bit (so if I would have used my head, I would have figured that version 0.61 would also be). As for ViRC, I was just going by what a web site described it as. Oh, well. Back to the saltmine.

Well, i haven't seen a working version of MSN messenger for win 3.x yet, but i feel MSN IM isn't that great anyway. I use it in Win 9x only because i have a few friends who don't have any other IM and won't be bothered installing another one. Personally, i like AIM way better. It is excellent for P2P file transfer without limiting the file size, using in thread images is a breeze, etc...
So why not just get AIM for Win 3.x ?
ICQ also works nicely on Win 3.x. You can find a link to download it on my page in the Software -> IM/Chat section.
Odigo, Trillian? Well, unfortunately neither seems to work in Win 3.x (at least i didn't find a version that did yet!).
Just my 2 cents.

Eyeball chat -
System requirements:
Microsoft Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP
· 400MHz Intel/AMD CPU with 64MB RAM
· 56Kbps connection or higher
· Speakers & microphone or headset (reduces feedback noise)Surely that wont work on 3.1? :)
