The port speed is determined by which UART in the machine (likely an older 8250--which would report a 2400 baud rate in MSD). I've used external 14.4KB modems on such equipment with little problem, but anything faster seems to have issues. Unless you're familiar with changing out hardware in laptops, I'd leave it alone.

8250 do support up to 9600 baut.
You can change the speed by using the following command:

mode comX 9600,n,8,1

where X is the serial port number (1, 2, ...)
9600 is the speed (max on current serial ports is 115200)
n is the parity bit (can be set to n or y for no or yes)
8 are the databits (can be set to 7 or 8)
1 is the stop bit (can be set to 1 or 2)

You can use the command in autoexec.bat file, so that it will be set at every reboot.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!
