Non system or disk error

I am trying to help a lady fix an older win3 machine that is giving her the Non system disk or disk error message. any input??

Here's the FIRST thing I would look for: Make sure there aren't any floppy disks in any of the drives. If that's not the case: Non system disk\disk error means that the disk has a valid MBR (master boot record), Partition tables, but there are no system files on it. Boot from a DOS system floppy which has SYS.COM on it. You can make one yourself just by system-formatting a floppy and copying C:\DOS\SYS.COM. From the A: drive type SYS C:. This should work. If you get General Failure, Data Error, Invalid Media Type, Seek Error, Page Fault, etc., then you're looking at physical damage and serious errors, but if it says System Transferred then you should be fine.

You should also be sure that the boot disk is for the same OS that is installed on the hard drive. (If it's Dos 6.20, be sure not to use a Dos 6.22 boot disk, etc., or you'll see lots of incorrect dos version errors later on.)
