no typing cursor in Word 6

OS: MS-DOS 6.22/WfW 3.11
CPU/Ram: Pentium 133Mhz/16MB
Comment:

I've recently gotten an older system (Pentium 133Mhz w/16MB RAM) up and running again with a fresh installation of MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows For Workgroups 3.11. Had almost forgotten how much fun it is messing with the older systems like this, and it work great for things like email and Word 6. However, I am having one somewhat annoying issue. I've installed the Windows 3.1 drivers for the Cirrus Logic 5446 (1MB) PCI video card I have in this system, and for the most part it seems to be working okay, but in the higher color modes it seems to cause some problem with MS Word 6.0. If I'm using either 256 or 16-bit color modes (resolution doesn't seem to make a difference, I'm using 800x600 currently), the flashing cursor in Word doesn't appear, so you can't tell where the cursor is without typing something and seeing where it appears. If I switch to 16 color mode, the cursor shows up fine. Word 6 is the only program affected by this, typing cursors in any other program (Notepad, Write, dialog boxes, etc.) work fine in any color mode. I've also noticed that any greyed out buttons in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5 look a little weird and darker than the should be when using the higher color modes, but it's nothing that affects functionality like in Word 6.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I used to run Windows 3.11 with Word 6.0 in high color mode on this system a long time ago, and I never had any problems. I can't think of anything I'm doing differently now, though.

1st- be sure to have all the updates (although I doubt Win3.11 updates will solve this)
2nd- where did you downloaded the drivers? are they the same that you wre previously using (when the issue didn't use to happen)? if not try searching for a newer version at www.driverguide.com
3rd- do you have any programs that change the Windows 3.11 UI behavior? if so try disabling them all to see if it continues to happen... if not reenable one by one until you discover the problematic one

Hope this helps

I don't remember exactly where I downloaded the drivers (since it was so long ago), but these are the same drivers I was using previously. I've look around a bit and haven't been able to find anything newer (or older) that what I have. (version 1.31) As for anything changing the UI behavior, I don't have anything of that type installed. It's pretty much just a fresh install with MS Word 6.0, Internet Explorer/Outlook Express 5, Opera 3.62, and WinZip being about the only things I've installed. (besides the display drivers and MS TCP/IP-32)

On the subject of updates, where would I find them for WfW 3.11? I didn't remember there were any in particular (for WfW 3.11 itself).

Find some updates HERE

But, I still think, this is probably a video driver related issue... Does this happen when you use the default Windows 3.11 SVGA driver (if it works)? Try posting your System.ini... maybe one of the video driver components is not well installed (maybe the dib engine or the grabber... never know)
And about True Color (24/32 bits) modes? Are they affected (or your card is not able of this color mode)?

The default SVGA driver doesn't work with this card. (unfortunately) As for True Color mode, the card is only capable of that in 640x480 resolution (which I wouldn't want to use), but the same problem happens there are well.

Probably doesn't make a difference, but I played around with Windows NT 3.51 a little today (which I also have video drivers for), and it doesn't have this problem. Word 6 (and IE/OE5) works fine in 256 or 16-bit color mode. I'd much rather stick with DOS+Windows 3.1x though, since it's a good deal faster than NT 3.51 with 16MB RAM.

It doesn't appear to affect anything that I noticed, definitely no effect on the Word 6 issue.

The only non-default drivers I found were the MSIE5 drivers... Try commenting everything from the MSIE50 directory (you probably know... put a ';' in the beggining of the line) and see if it happens.
I've not found any errors in the video drivers... No default windows drivers (386grabber and other components) are mixed along Cirrus ones (except 286grabber, but WfW does not use it as it does not start in 286 standard mode)

I've noticed that the problem still occurs even on fresh Windows 3.1 and WfW 3.11 installs that don't have MSIE 5 (or anything else besides the video drivers) installed. Would it still be worth it to try commenting out those lines?

Maybe you should search for a Word 6 update (is your's Word 6.0c?)

The version of Word I'm using is the standalone regular version 6.0, but as a test I just tried installing Office 4.3 (which includes Word 6.0c) in a fresh installation of just Windows and the display drivers, and the problem occurs there as well.

This definitely seems strange, is there any chance this could be some minor thing wrong with the video card itself, that's only noticable in Windows 3.1x with these drivers? (since NT 3.51 had no trouble) Because I definitely never had this problem or the weird icons in IE/OE5) when I ran Win 3.1x on this system quite a while ago, and I can't think of anything else that's different.
