Hi. I've been trying to get my CD-ROM to work but I get a "No drives found, aborting installation." error. My CONFIG.SYS has "DEVICEHIGH=C:\DOS\OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001" and my AUTOEXEC.BAT has "LOADHIGH=C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001". I have a Packard Bell Legend 18CD. I know the CD-ROM probably works because the "Busy" light turns on when I turn the computer on. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

If the drive is IDE try one of the bootdisk.com disks with cd support. If the cd is accessable with it just copy the appropriate files to the c drive edit the hdd config.sys and autoexec.bat files to suit.

Feel free to post back with any quaries.

Good luck.

You need to get two files off the boot floppy, OAKCDROM.SYS and MSCDEX.exe and put them into C: drive. That's all it seems to me. If they are there already, it's another thing.

My computer doesn't seem to recognize the drive, even with a bootdisk. The needed files are in the specified directories, so I know that's not the problem. Could it be a hardware problem? Thanks for the responses.

Could be.

Have a look at the cdrom jumper settings first. Also you could try tesing the drive on another pc.

Also may be a faulty ribbon cable.

Is the line on the edge of the cable facing towards pin one on the cd connecter, normally facing towards the cd power connector.

Hope this helps.

When looking at the CD connection check if
it is connected to the sound card.

Many earlier Packard Bells connected their
CD Drives to the sound card. If so, you
will need another driver to establish the
card to CD connection, then the CD driver.

tech-fred may have hit the nail on the head.
Is it a 486dx2-50 with sound blaster or sb-pro card?

Thanks for the replies. Yup, it's a 486dx2-50 with SB-Pro. How would I get the card to connect to the CD? And.. if I get that done... would I just keep the current command I have in my autoexec.bat? Thanks for all the help.

If the drive doesn't have jumpers at the rear for setting MASTER or SLAVE, it's a proprietary drive. (Especially if the data cable goes to a sound card or other small interface card.) OR, if the data cable is a 50 wire cable, it's SCSI. If either of the above is true, post the make/model # off of the CD drive itself, and we'll find drivers that will work.

Could you give us the model number of the cd rom and sb-pro card(there where i few variants). Then we can help further.
Also does the sound card have a two rows of pins labelled cdrom.

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna get to bed, but I'll open it up tomorrow. The model numbers should be right there on the actual parts, right? Thanks.

The make/model should be on the top of the drive. You'll probably have to remove it to see it, but that's only four screws and the power/data cables.

Hi. Alright... on the CD-Drive I found a few numbers/names that might yield importance: BPB BPCS#730017, MODEL CR-563-B, and Matshus---a-Kabuki. It was in fact connected to what I'm pretty sure was the soundcard. On the soundcard it a couple Packard Bell logos, but the thing that caught my eye was CRYSTAL CS4321-KL BTAPHD9433, there was also another smaller thing that had "Yamaha" on it. Thanks... hope this helps.

It's a lousy proprietary drive. You should be able to get the driver for it here;

http://www.mke.panasonic.co.jp/en/download/download.htm

Does it use a carriage that the CDROM has to be fitted into?
It is probably a 1x or 2x speed drive.
good luck

Thanks for pointing me to that driver, Art. Thanks everyone for all the help! Well, I downloaded the cd-563 driver to my computer. It came with the actual driver fle and an install program. I ran the install program, but it said it couldn't find my Cd-rom, saying that I had to reconnect the drive but I knew that it already was connected! So, because I didn't want to open up my computer again, I just plugged in the driver file in my "config.sys.", I restart the computer, and the cd-rom works! Thank you very much everyone for all the help... it's been quite fun. Thanks again!
