Digital,

I think you left the old version up on your site.... I downloaded and installed it and it looked the same.. No RAM disk was created (it's still copying files to the hard drive) and command.com still doesn't work (it asks for winoldap.mod). Good effort though.

For those still interested in this sort of thing, the lastest version of my windows boot disk called shards is available by getting it from my briefcase...

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/michdaugh

Minimum requirements are probably a 486 with 8 megabytes of RAM, but 6 may suffice.

Digi let me know when you get the new version up and I'll be glad to check it out for you.

Digitalfish, just like Zyo i get the message "page not found" when trying to goto ur page...

Michael, i tested out ur new version & it works on both the 486dx & the 133mhz systems that i spoke of in the earlier string...the DOS window works just fine...GOOD JOB...

BTW: if u want to free up another 28kb on the disk, delete the Vgalogo.rle...the splash screen is embedded in the win.com file so the .rle file realy is not necessary...

N1,

Thanks for the testing, and thanks for the tip on vgalogo.rle. I thought I had gotten rid of that file but obviously I hadn't.

For digitalfish's page, go here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mw16

He put it in caps, when it is actually lower case, and the web is case sensitive, hence the problem.

Have fun!

Hey N1, Do you want to help me get a calmira version working? I think it can be done...

I DO NOT want calmira in this suite. It takes up TOO MUCH SPACE! P.S. My dialup was down, so I couldn't upload.
Please excuse the caps, just don't like the idea of screwing up 3.1 to make it LOOK like that crappy thing called Windows 9x

Digital,

Sorry you feel that way... But even though Calmira does make windows 3.1 look like windows 9X, it doesn't stop there. It gives windows 3.1 A lot more functionality (one of my favorite things is the simple ability to right click). So sorry to dissapoint you, I'm going to try and make it work as I do have some space to work with on mine. Also if you replace progman.exe with calmira.exe and filemanager.exe with the calmira explorer, there's not that much difference in size (I don't know the exact numbers).

N1, how about a browser add on, perhaps Opera? It's small, we can make it optional too. Whatiya think?

To Digitalfish6201: I tried version 1.0 of Mini-Windows16 and I think it is pretty good. It is an interesting idea. I am a Calmira user on my main Win3.1 system, because of some of the features, but I still use Program Manager a lot, too. (I even use Program Manager in Win9x/2000 sometimes) But I agree with you, Calmira should not be a part of Mini-Windows16. I think there would be too many extra files needed to make it work. (As for shards, that makes no difference to me, I like MWin16 better. [no offense to Michael]) Anyway, I like this idea, and would like to put a link to your download site on the Win 3.1 page of my website. If you don't want a link there, let me know. I'll be checking for version 2.0!
By the way, I don't know if this is possible, but it would be nice to see a way for the timer driver to be installed on MWin16. I have a game (Powerball) that I could run off a seperate floppy, but it needs that driver.

To Michael: Just an observation: "Browser add-on"?! Wow. You must have a special plan for compression if you are going to get that all on one floppy. I know Opera is small, but wouldn't you need a way of dialing up, too?

PC Freak,

It's ok if you like Mini windows better, I am in no way competing with Digital... However, what exactly don't you like about it? Maybe I can improve it... To me it's kinda just 'there'... I neither like or dislike it.. I mean it does what I intended it to do, nothing more, nothing less. Just curious...I mean he does (or did) have the ultra cool ski free game, so it's not fair to compare mine to his as I don't have many good win 3.1 games =).

As for the browser thingy, it would probably have to be on a second disk, hence the 'add-on' name. Have you ever checked out the qnx demo diskette? (www.qnx.com) They actually wrote a browser, mini OS and dialer that loads from one diskette! And it's not a crappy browser either, it's very nice. If you have compatible hardware (either a supported hardware modem - not winmodem- or a supported NIC card is required). It really is neat... I know it doesn't pertain to this thread, it's just a side note.

-Michael (going to check out the new mini windows as we speak).

Well, one thing I like better about MWin16 are the font styles. If I remember right, shards only had one that looked sort of like a boldface typewriter. MWin16 had the normal default styles. I wasn't comparing by what games they came with, mostly by how it looks. Also, the version of shards that I tried reformated the disk to be 1.69MB if I remember right, but I couldn't add files to it with out getting a disk full error. When I tried deleting all the files on the disk, even though it said it it had 1.69MB free, I couldn't write more than about 800KB of files. I also just had a little bit of a preference for MWin16 because that was the first thing like this that I saw, and the project that Digitalfish2601 was trying to start seems to be going in a bit of a different direction than he originally wanted. It's nothing personal to you, Michael, just my preference. (Although I'd at least try any version that had the timer driver working...)

PC Freak,

Just curious.... What operating system are you using? I formatted the diskette to the DMF2 standard, which is supposed to be supported by all microsoft OSes (except for DOS 6.22 and earlier). It'd be nice to know what you are using as I didn't have any problems writing to it. I could (I believe) techically fit the disk on a 1.44 megabyte floppy.

As for the fonts, I have to be honest, I didnt really like the one I used either... What one would you recommend I replace it with?

On a side note, Digitalfish, have you updated MW16 yet? Everytime I go to download it it has the same date for the file, and it takes me a while to download it so I want to make sure it's the newest version before I try again.

Thanks!
-Michael

I was trying to write to the disk in Windows 98 and/or (I forget) Win2000. Tried it in the command prompt window and Windows Explorer. As for the fonts, I like the fonts that are used by default in Win3.1 (also used by MWin16) which I think are System and MS Sans Serif. By the way, what do you think? Is the timer driver possible?

Freak,

I am going to add the timer driver and the fonts sometime later today.... The timer driver is only 4k so that's no problem... I am also going to try a Non DMF formatted diskette... Just curious, do you

I will let you know when it's done...

Michael, adding calmira would take up too much space --- in the newest version of Calmira II Calmira.exe alone is 829kb....u would also have to add some extra win3x .DLL files to get it to work...as far as adding a browser? that may take some time...

keep the fonts.fon that u already have installed then add the font Sserife.fon --- create a win.ini file & add the following lines:
[[fonts]
MS Sans Serif 8,10,12,14,18,24 (VGA res)=SSERIFE.FON

if u want the win95 standard colors added to Shards or MWin16, add the following lines to the win.ini file:
[colors]
Scrollbar=224 224 224
Background=0 128 128
ActiveTitle=0 0 128
InactiveTitle=128 128 128
Menu=192 192 192
Window=255 255 255
WindowFrame=0 0 0
MenuText=0 0 0
WindowText=0 0 0
TitleText=255 255 255
ActiveBorder=192 192 192
InactiveBorder=192 192 192
AppWorkspace=128 128 128
Hilight=0 0 128
HilightText=255 255 255

ButtonShadow=128 128 128
GrayText=128 128 128

N1,

Thanks for the tips, I already added the arial font however... It looks better already =). As for Calmira, it may not be possible, but I think I still may give it a go.... RAR may be able to crunch it down enough so it will fit. If worse comes to worse, it just won't work. I'm kind of burnt out on this thing at the moment so I may not try for a little while. Also thanks for the color scheme tip...

PC Freak,

I added the timer driver to Shards! I am uploading the image file as a I write this. Get it from the same place as the other version. Let me know if your game works.. Also there is an explanation in the readme.txt file on the disk which tells why you couldn't add files and hopefully a way to correct it.

-Michael

Michael, i think u need to add the following lines to ur system.ini file:
[drivers]
timer=timer.drv

this should make PC Freaks game work while running Shards...

N1,

Been there done that.. I think it's missing DLLs or some other helper application / system file. I'm going to do a search for a dependency viewer tomorrow and see what other things are running and hopefully get it working. If I can figure out how to do that, then all Klik n'play games should work with Shards!.... =)That will make a neat little bootable arcade...
