I recently had a CD ROM drive put into my Packard Bell Legend, and since win 3.1 on it does not auto detect I was given a disk by the professional that put it in. He told me jus to go to the A drive and type install. I did that and it said "bad command or file name" So I went to the MD DOS SHELL tree and went to the A drive, and selected the most recent (and only one that could be selected) and it inflated and then returned to MS DOS SHELL tree, and it still did not detect the new drive. Please Help!!!!!!

Sometimes Win 3.1 doesn't have the correct drivers to load a CD ROM drive. So i would reccomend using DOS (If you dont have it use a boot disk with cd rom utility) and see if it will detect you ide cd rom drive (im assuming its ide). When at C:\ Prompt type D: for CD ROM drive or whatever letter your cd rom drive will be. then if it does detect it, search the net for a driver for that specific type of cd rom and install it. then you should get a working cd rom drive :)

What do you mean Windows 3.1 sometimes does not have the correct driver? It has no CD-ROM drivers. All CD-ROM drives are loaded in DOS and activated by MSCDEX & Device driver placed in Config.Sys & Autoexec.Bat Windows then picks up the Cd drive as the next logiical drive after all hard drives.

Log into http://www.windrivers.com/company.htm
and select the makers name of your CD drive to locate its DOS Driver.

One last check however - Do you have a last drive statement in your Config.sys file? If it is set at say D and your CD-ROM is E it will hid it in both DOS & Windows!

That's right, get your CD-ROM working in DOS. If you have an IDE drive, don't fool with drivers. Get OAKCDROM.SYS and use that. It comes on Windows 98 startup disks, and can be downloaded several places. Then put this in your config.sys, DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001. And in your autoexec.bat make sure the line is C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001. And your IDE drive should work. If you have an E: drive on your computer make sure you have a LASTDRIVE Z line in the config.sys. Most versions of DOS acivate through E automatically.
