Hi,

I'm having problems getting a network between 2 computers. A 386 and a 486 both with WFW3.11. Both computers have succesfully installed the drivers, protocols (I first tried NetBEUI), ISA-network cards.
386: SMC starcard PLUS (WD/8000S) [NDIS2]
486: Realtek 8019 (REALPNP) [NDIS2]
plug & play
The UTP cable is okay.
As soon as I connect both computers they can only find there own computername.
I also tried TCP/IP on WFW3.11.
Also both of them have a soundcard installed, but I don't think they cause any trouble. The 386 runs DOS 6.22 and the 486 runs DOS 5.0.
Is this a hardware problem or am I using the wrong network program? I hope not.

Somebody help me?
I've been trying to get it work for a whole week now.

Already thanks

Are you using a UTP (10Base-T) RJ45 crossover cable??, if using patch cable will need a hub inbetween!

As above, and

Are the computer "workgroup" names exactly the same?

Are the computer "names" different?

The workgroup names are the same. The cable is a good UTP cable.
I'm not sure if the SMC starcard PLUS has an ethernet option (it is from 1993!) or if it can use TCP/IP?
They both have a network address, but how can you link them together, if everything is right?
I'm not even certain if it is the SMC Starcard PLUS. WFW3.11 detected it as a starcard.

1 Problem solved -> New problem created:
I found out I installed the wrong drivers
I have a SMC EtherCard 8216C!!
I Installed it and rebooted the PC:
Then EMM386.EXE gives error #06 (00B8-003A) when I start command "Net Start".
Changing order in config&autoexec and removing EMM386 didn't help.

Now what?

Could be a memory error "either not enough, bad stick, or not configured right in your config/autoexec" but you also never did state whether it is a crossover cable between the two or if you had a hub or switch.

Without one of these you will never get it to work anyways. It doesn't necessarily matter if it's UTP because unless one of the ends are crossed you won't get anywhere without a hub or switch.
