Hello all,
I have a DOS/Windows 3.11 computer, and after installing my sound card driver and i try to run Windows 3.11 the message "Not enough conventional Memory to be able to run windows. Quit one or more applications to increase availavle memory or restart your computer."
Ok. My windows has Visual basic, ie 3 & 5, paint, opera, word 6, winzip etc etc. I doubt that will affect my problem :D Of course, i tried memmaker.exe but it still doesen't work
Here is my AUTOEXEC.BAT contents: -
C:\WINDOWS\NET START C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /L /X LH /L:2,32640 C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE /S /D:CD003 SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 LH /L:2,38208 C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE.COM /Y @ECHO OFF PROMPT $P$G SET TEMP=C:\DOS MODE CON CODEPAGE PREPARE=((437) C:\DOS\EGA.CPI) MODE CON CODEPAGE SELECT=437 LH /L:2,16656 KEYB UK,,C:\DOS\KEYBOARD.SYS PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\IE5;%PATH% C:\OPL3SA\SETUPSA.EXE /S

I got extremely bored and only read this bit "Not enough conventional Memory to be able to run windows". Obviously you need to find a way of releasing enough conventional memory:
that doesent help me :S Even when i edit the autoexec.bat file to only run standard drivers it still does not work!!! I do not think that DOS has grasped how much RAM etc etc that i have as i have far better specs than Windows 3.1 requires...
Can you run the mem command and tell us all the info. If you are able to take a screen dump of the mem /c /p command that would help us even more. Also what version of DOS are you running 5 or 6.x?
c:\programs\xmsdsk.exe 65000 set ieppp=E:\PROGRAMS\MSIE50 set pctcp=E:\PROGRAMS\MSIE50\pctcp.shv SET TEMP=J:\temp I:\WINDOWS\311\net start @ECHO OFF PROMPT $p$g PATH E:\PROGRAMS\MSIE50;I:\WINDOWS\311;C:\WINDOWS\WFWG;F:\PROGRAMS\MSIE40;F:\PROGRAMS\MSIE50;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS I:\WINDOWS\311\SMARTDRV.EXE /L
trouble often can be hardware make sure everything is working right ram sticks, ide etc....
Well, if i take the three lines (sound driver files) from the system.ini file off then it works. Its not a hardware problem as i have 128mb ram, even though i think i heard on here that dos only detects 64mb.
I do not know how to screen dump, is that the printscreen button? i have tried it but doesent work :S
The problem is that sound drivers and MS Lan Client (C:\WINDOWS\NET START) together use to much conventional memory.
Do a "mem" command and post results. That will tell how much ram is free - about 600 kB of conventional memory is considered good.
You will probably need to optimize memory usage. There are some new drivers for mouse, cd-rom, etc. you can use to replace old ones - new ones use less memory. Search for CTMOUSE - replaces MOUSE.COM, SHSUCDEX - replaces MSCDEX.EXE, JEMMEX - replaces EMM386 and HIMEM.
Ahh, those memory saver files sound like they may be the problem, most of the drivers i am using are quite old and ones which my dad used to use and still does for appropriate reasons. Thanks mate! :)
I have been looking on the internet for these files which you have stated but i cannot find them. Could anybody point out the location of them?
This page links to most of the new drivers: http://www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/lsm.... Descriptins are there too. Some drivers are loaded differently than their MS-DOS versions, but they come with documentation anyway, so there should be no problem.
Yes well, i have replaced mscdex.exe with shsucdx.com, and have replaced mouse.com with ctmouse.exe and have uploaded them both into higher memory, i have also taken all the other posts into consideration and edited them in some way or another, but windows still doesent load with the sound drivers in windows system.ini, i have taken NET START out of autoexec.bat just to see if it might work without it, but no it doesent. I have edited config.sys and autoexec.bat to all your considerations but it still asks for more memory. Mind you, if you take the three sound drivers out of the system.ini it works, but i want sound in windows... :S
Any more suggestions pelase? I am really annoyed, and can someone tell me how to do a "Screen Dump" when i type mem/c/p please?
When the BIOS starts, the card appears just before DOS starts and it says "Configuring OPL3-SA3 card" (or something along the lines)
The card i believe is plug and play as it says. It is sound blaster compatable (on some games it can run as a soundblaster pro (DOS))
It is a Yamaha OPL3-SAx Card. I got given the computer as i wanted to do the type of thing i am doing on it now (Old games, win311) and i have never changed the componants of it as i have found the drivers etc for windows311 etc. It did take me ages to find a working ATI Mach64vt driver for it. But thats not anything to do with this...
The only thing that is stopping me on having my perfect DOS/Windows 3.11 machine is this bloody sound card! As i said, YAMAHA OPL3-SAx, the drivers that I have found for it is the right one as the driver supports All yamaha OPL3-SA chips. Thats all i know about it really.
The drivers do include a DOS Sound Setup for the card and inside the same setup it has drivers for windows3.1.
So do you think that i can use the sound blaster 1 (or another) driver for windows (included on diskettes) or from the net would work with the card? I think that may do the trick. Good man! :D Now, all i need is to know what the best sound blaster driver is best for my YAMAHA OPL3-SAx Sound blaster compatable... Anyone?

oh yea you should be able to use the default sound blaster drivers that come with windows either 1.0 or 1.5 likly the opl3.drv,sapi!opl.drv and/or adlib drivers will work for midi
ah, thanks alot, as you can see in my own system.ini at the top of the page, i have a mach64 display driver already, have for a long time now. I Yamaha OPL3-SAx sound drivers which i have installed are from YAMAHA themselves for the right OS.
To be able to get back into Windows3.11 after installing the audio driver i have to delete these three lines from the system.ini under the heading "386Enh" which i see that you have in your system.ini: -
Hmmm, after testing the sound blaster 1.0 and 1.5 drivers for windows, it did not work. When i would install one of them, a box would appear with port and interupt, i pt the right ones in (default ones) 220 and 5 but it would say that i had the wrong intreupt settings for my card. I tried all the interupts and the other sond blaster driver bt niether of them worked...
