OS: Windows 3.1 but looking f
CPU/Ram: i486 DX at 33MHz- 8MB Ram
Comment:

Hi there!, i need a complete operating system solution (+ software) for old machines with low specs (486 DX33 / 8MB RAM...).
Actually i don't want a Linux solution, i was thinking running FreeDOS, but I need a mature and stable GUI, like Windows 3.1.
Isn't there a clone or something of it on the net?.
If not, there is a stable and great GUI for Dos?.
Another OS suggestion?.

Actually only using DOS, i have a big choice in software, including a browser (arachne), but It does not applies to my needs.

Thanks in advance,
iAdx.

I tried Ensemble (GEOS) last month, but it is too "underpowered" and have a low number of software.
OS/2 I think it's better, but Warp4 will run on that system? (the 486).

What apps?

Lotus for DOS and many others run quick as a bunny on a 486-33.

OpenGEM

IBM OS/2 Warp3 would probably be better as
a standalone O/S, the bonus pak includes
LOTUS Office Suite etcetc. Dial up
internet access is feasible but the
available browsers are limited in there
compatibility to modern Java/SSL etecetc.

Which version of ensemble are you referring
to when you say you tried it?..
The current version (4.2x) has several
thousand apps available and supports a web
browser, pdf viewer,full graphics handling,
html editor, etc etc...

Breadbox/GEOS/NewDeal is very complete and still being
supported, just the price is the
disadvantage:

I've tried Ensemble Lite, sorry, Ensemble is licensed only in volume ones, New Deal can be licensed per machine, and include all the goodies to start using it, but I think 99 USD per copy, at the times we're living (2005) it's overpriced.
And for an FTP tool (separate) for Newdeal, I would not pay $34.xx.
I saw the number of programs, it's great, but I was looking for something cheaper.

iADX, I live in the UK and have both IBM
OS/2 Warp3 (RED) Floppy and Warp4 CD, both
boxed sets, plus the Mensys Update CD, they
belonged to a Client who gave up on OS/2
for a while then decided eComstation
(Serenity) version was a better bet. They
owe me around 50 euros.

Somewhere I may have a copy of GEM on 5.25
floppies!!!!!!

I was once in the alternative OS craze and found something called menuet. It was a full 32bit os that fit on a floppy and i ran it on my thinkpad 770ed for a time when i couldnt get windows installed for some reason (linux eventually went in fine though). Worked great... though i do remember that it lacked networking support. However that was almost a year ago so u never know what could have been implemented into it (or if its even still around).

tried it, works alright but it seems to be "self obsessive" having no contact with my hard disk. I believe it can save the ramdrive to it though and reload it on the next boot but i havent tried it. It seemed to have networking capabilities (also claims to have working mail server) but i was unable to try it as i have wireless networking. i couldnt get my sound to work either, but i did get it to play a cd (not through the speakers, but it was able to read how many tracks and the time on each and said it was playing.) this may be because i was using a cd drive without the audio cable plugged in and any pre windows media player 7.0 needed this in order to play a cd... maybe it works off the same concept? but as of the specs uve givin above it doesnt sound as though ud be worried of this type of thing.

I previously tried menuetOS, fast of course, but very basic, with little software catalog.
Also, I don't think this system will grow too much, because it's programmed in pure assembler... and people prefer (because it's easier) programming in C.
Thank you anyway, I think I'll use WarpOS, and if MenuetOS grows in software availability, i'll switch (this guys have to create APIs to C, Pascal, and Basic programmers)
