Look in your DOS directory AND your Windows directory... at least one should have a copy of himem.sys.
Edit your config.sys to reflect the file's location OR simply copy the file from one directory to the other.
Jeeze.. try and calm down, the docs are still there (unless your 'sister' erased them).
If there is no copy at all on your c: drive, check your windows or dos install disks - should be something called "himem.sy_ that can be restored by:

expand a:\himem.sy_ c:\dos\himem.sys
(or whatever)

You could also prob'ly start windows in standard mode:

win /s

... if you can't seem to get around in DOS

Oops - win /s won't do much without himem (what was I thinking?)
However, if you're a little DOS-phobic, the excellent DOSSHELL will let you get around your disk without having to learn command-line syntax.

Hi. I am stuck in DOS as well and need a himem.sys file. I think it is in my DOS directory because when I type dir:more at the c:\> prompt I get a long list of everything on the computer and when I go to EDIT it is in the list of DOS files, but whenever I try to copy it out to WIN I get a message that says it can't be copied to itself. I tried copying it out to a floppy in A:\ and then back and got a message that asked if I wanted to overwrite the existing file. Obviously, I lam doing something wrond in trying to get it into WIN, but don't know what and don't even know if that is possible. I suspect that without himem.sys in windows, I can't get to the program in any way. I get a prompt that looks like this C:\> When I type WIN it says I need Himem.sys and to make sure it is in my directory. I have tried changing directories by typing C: at the prompt. It briefly displays C:\ and then immediately redisplays C:\> I have tried using the cd command to change to the WIN dir and have had no success. Unfortunately, my DOS systeme doesn't have the old DOSHELL to go to. A friend, more experienced in these matters than I suggested that I possibly have a corrupted himem.sys file. I think I may have also done something myself. When I was trying to reduce files on my hard drive to make more space, I may have inadvertantly erased cache files used by Himem.sys because I thought they were part of the cashed temp files. This is just a guess, but I had been having a lot of difficulty, before the big crash of November, with himem.sys when I tried to reboot from a system shutdown. Mini crashes were getting more and more frequent. After a crash the computer refused to reboot to windows and posted the message himem.sys is missing. The only way to get back into windows was to shut the computer down. My friend, currently unavailable, suggested I might have a worm in the system. I had thought the problem was with having increasingly less available membor available (I was down to about a gig), but he said there are some viruses that load a ton of files every time a person downloads e-mail. Anyhow, that is my situation. Any suggestions as to what to do and a clean himem.sys file would be very much appreciated. I have spent hours on this and am learning a lot, but I am getting frustrated. I don't want to reload the Win 98 program on the HD until I have gotten my Geneaology records out of the computer. I will try today to hook up a zip drive to the computer and transfer the Geneaology files to a zip disk. But I run the Family Tree Maker geneaology program and it will not allow me to run the program from a removable disk. That is why I didn't back them up to the zip disk in the first place. ARGGGGG.

I also am in need of a himem.sys file - I'm running DOS ver 6.22 on this computer. I haven't used this computer in a very long time. It has stero shell on it which tells me that the file exists on another drive. When I tried to copy it, I got a msg it already exists, do I wish to overwrite? and I was afraid to say yes. The drive is partitioned with c drive & d drive however I can't see the d drive from stereo shell. ??? Unable to locate any backup or dos disk. Please help!?
