Hello there, my friend gave me an old japanese NEC PC 9821 LD with 486SX/33 processor notebook running under windows 3.1 japanese version. since i cannot understand japanese i want to change the hard disk with 2 megabytes and install either windows 3.1 or 95. need help please on how to set up. thank you in advance

I'm just making a guess here, but I'd suspect you have 2MB of RAM and not a 2MB Hard Drive. Either way, Windows 3.1 will be slow and Win95 will not work at all if that's the case. I would suspect that you could FDISK/Reformat and reinstall an English version of DOS and go with Windows 3.1 (should you decide to do so).

First off I presume you want to install a larger hard drive, that may not be feasible due to BIOS Limitations.
Secondly if you use a W98SE OEM boot disk to boot this PC, then you can run http://www.hwinfo.com from floppy to find out the specs of the PC.
Lastly when you have this info a better idea of what this is capable off should be feasible....

I don't think English DOS w3x will run on that NEC.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

is there a way for me to use a fraction of the hard disk (2GB) that may be utilized for installing windows 95to Mechanix2Go:
can you help me on how to use an english DOS to work on my NEC?to wizard-fred:
i cannot find it's BIOS, can you help me?

The only way to get this to work is to go the the NEC Japanese Website and find the manual, we are like mushrooms here, working in the dark.

If it has the "Japanese BIOS" it is not simply a problem of language and calls to the Kanji ROMs.
The main problem is that the video BIOS loads at a different address.
Consequently, as long as you run "pure text" apps, it will "work".
But if there are any graphics calls of consequence, it will halt.
