the only place I've looked so far is ebay but no one has a working set.
the prices are right ($5-$20) but either the serial cable is missing, or the power supply is missing, or the install software is missing, or it's some kind of crazy laptop or nonstandard card or whatever.

all I want is an external modem with everything necessary to hook it up to a 486 PC that's running Windows 3.1

the stores only sell 56 K's that either my system requirements don't meet or the software can only be installed via CD which this PC doesn't have (only has 5.25 & 3.5)

I appreciate any referrals you can give me on this,

-MC

You know they still sell hardware internal modems that work with Windows 3.1 & a 386 & higher. (At least where I live). I have one in my 486 66mhz with only a 3.5 inch floppy. You dont need a cd-rom drive. I use Netscape 3.03 + dialup that has everything you need. I also downloaded & use Netscape 4.04 because it has better java support.

I can't see why someone can't manually configure a modem. The only problem I can see with getting it to work is trying to find log-in scripts that work with your ISP since most ISPs don't want to be bothered with trying to set up Win 3.1 to the internet. But you should still be able to get the modem to run without software, If you toy around with the IRQ and settings.
