YES, I'M HAVING PROBLEM WITH RUNNIG MS-DOS 6.22 WITH WINDOWS 3.1. I WANTED TO START OFF FRESH, SO I FORMATTTED THE HARD DISK AND LOADED DOS 6.22 AND THEN WINDOWS3.1, AND THEN TRYIED THE MOUSE AFTER AFTERWARDS WITH NO SUCCUESS. THE COMPUTER BOOTS UP THE POINT WHERE THE WORDS COMES UP SAYING STARTING MS-DOS.......AND THE COMPUTEER STOPS. IS THIS THE HIGH VER. OF DOS DOING THIS OR WHAT. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE MOUSE, NOW I'M ENDED UP STUCK AT
STARTING MS-DOS...... "PLEASE" SOMEONE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OR NO HOW, WRITE IN RESPONSE TO THIS MESSAGE.THANKS,
LARRY

he can't even get that far lol.
ms-dos 6.22 is the highest available for use, unless you coun't ms-dos 7, 7.1, 8 but those are for win95/98/me, but lets not get into that, lol.
try it again, and press f5 just before or when you see the starting ms-dos... text.
this will bypass your startup files, and go directly to a prompt, without loading your dos drivers.
if that works, then reboot, and press f8 (same way as above) this will step through your startup files, it will ask you before each driver is loaded, when the system freezes again, that may be the driver or command that may be causing the problem.
report back your findings, if you can even get that far.

There seem to be a lot well meaning people posting a lot of incorrect info(ie-whats post)lately.
Its good to see more people here, but please read the posts correctly, then answer. If in dought post nought, someone with the correct answer will respond(ie-tony's post). I must admit to being guilty also;), but I'm learning.
This will cause less frustration to the person/s with the problem.
Have fun all.

THANKS TONY, I WENT THROUGH ALL THE STEPS FROM YOUR POSTING ABOVE, BUT I STILL GET STUCK AT THE C:\PROMPT BECAUSE I CAN'T LOAD WINDOWS TO CHANGE THE CONFIG FILE,BECAUSE A MESSAGE COMES UP STATING THAT THE SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE IN HIMEM AREA OR MISSING HIMEM.SYS FILE. I'M ALRIGHT UNTIL I GET TO THIS POINT. HOW CAN I BRING UP WINDOWS? OR CHANGE THE CONFIG FILE A COMMAND PROMT TO SET HIMEM.SYS

Larry try an MS Dos bootdisk from bootdisk.com.
Try and get to the c: using this. From the a:> prompt type c:.
You may be then be able to run win 3.x from
the c:\windows(type cd c:\windows) directory by typing win. Then use notepad to edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat files. You could also use Dos the edit command in the Dos directory.
Let use know how you get on good luck.
