Comment:

I've just purchased MS Office 2K to replace my years old version 4.3.

I want to give my old pgm to a friend to use (origional disks - 31 of them), but the problem is that when I first installed V4.3 my name was written to the install pgm.

Question: Does anyone know how to remove my name from the setup prg in V4.3 so that it can be re-used on my friends machine?

Any help would be appreciated.

Geoff Clark.

If I remember right. User details were recorded in the Setup.Ini file! If this is the case I have e-mailed you a clean one!

I do not see why setup.ini should not work. I renamed setup.ini to setup.inx then copied setup.ini back onto disk 1 with Word 6.0 & Excel 5.0 (which are of the same age as Office 4x) only this year. And it worked! The only problem is getting your hands on a unregistered copy of setup.ini So why not with Office 4.3? I say give it a go Geoff if Mick C has sent you a clean copy. What have you to lose. Be sure to backup your copy of file first, just in case.
They seemed to change the setup layout after Office 4.3 when they started with Windows 95 onwards, so it no longer works after this.

For anyone interested

Received a blank SETUP.INI file from Mick C and it does work.

But, if there is any copy of the origional INI file on the H/D within the Office directory the setup will read this and use the info first.

So the steps were: (1) Make a copy of the install INI then delete it. Also check there is no SETUP.PAT in the floppy. If there is, delete it as it also contains the same info. (2) Copy a blank SETUP.INI to the floppy. The serial numbers can be changed with a Hex editor and the file doesn't care. (3) I found it best to wipe Windows and the Office files as I had previously install my copy I wasn't sure if the info had also been written elsewhere. (4) Re-install the lot.

Results my friend now has a good copy of MS Office 4.3 origional disks that I now don't need.

My thanks to Mick C.

Happy it worked. If program has never been used do as wolf says. You may have to do some or all of Geoff Clark's actions on a copy of Windows that has had Office Installed. But just deleting the \Office directory should do it.
As a matter of interest the SETUP.INI file I sent geoff was an edited copy from Word 6.0 Disk One! The only differance being that the serial number had been changed.

I wish to thank Mick C and Geof Clark for their help in changing the owners name in MS Office 4.3. I downloaded the blank setup.ini file from Mick C and followed Geof's instructions in post #6.

It worked like a champ!! Thanks guys.

There's a lot of help and good advice freely given on this forum.
